We stayed two nights at the Aaron Shipman House with our two children (6 and 2) in the Basement Apartment. It is very spacious and nicely furnished with a fully eqipped kitchen (no breakfast though in the house). Jackie got straight to the hearts of our children when she provided a huge box of Lego. In addition, there was a huge selection of films, all their Disney favourites. It was really hard to motivate them to leave the appartment again. Another big plus is where it is situated. Very nice neighbourhood with great restaurants and a huge Wholefoods Market around the corner.

The only slight downturn from the apartment is in our view that it is a bit dark but which is to expect from a basement flat. However, there is access to a little patio which is probably nice for a sundowner. Only there was some work done when we were there so that we could not use it.

This will be the third time I have stayed at the Aaron Shipman House over several years.
I stay there when I have events two days in a row in DC.
The owners are a delight and are at the breakfast table with the guests.Great conversation at breakfast. All three times I have booked the smallest room which is quite nice and all that I need.It does have a shared bath yet is in a private part of the hall.Twice, because there was room, they upgraded me to larger rooms with a private bath.
The part of the house that appeals to me most is the deck/porth with lights and cozy furniture, hanging baskets and lattice work so that is seems enclosed yet you can see the sky.I love to read out there or if visitng with someone, knit.

Room Tip: On the web-site there are pictures of each room with the prices which makes it much easier to choose...

Arron Shipman House has become our home away from home! Breakfast is always delicious and plentiful. We especially love starting our day meeting such interesting folks from all over! Jackie and Charles are the most gracious of hosts so if you are shy you're never pressured to converse. There is a great selection of restaurants (all have outside seating), live theatre, market and drug stores in the area. Transportation is very convenient.

Room Tip: We've stayed in the lovely basement apartment several times and recommended it to friends who st...

i was in d.c. for a nursing convention. everyone was jealous that i got to come "home" every evening to a b&b, rather than a dull hotel room! and it was cheaper - but you gotta book early to save a room for you!! sitting on the patio, welcoming with a cookie, lucious breakfast, nice people, cozy room, no noise, trees, spring blossoms, walk a block to 3-4 great resturants, and living as the locals do! we even walked to the convention center, and rode a bus back b/c we had "stuff" to carry. we stayed extra days and went all over d.c.!! in our room,my friend slept on the big cozy bed, and i took the day bed - iam 5'10 and it was over 6' long and about 3-4' wide. the linens were great! what a great balance of life in d.c.

I was with traveller 1972, I loved the house. Big american house, comfortable, roomy, great porch on the back. Jackie and Charles are great. They clearly love doing this. Great idea to have breakfast together and talk, we met lovely people, americans and tourists like us. The area is lovely, lots of restaurants. First time I stayed in a B&B outside the Uk, great find by my friend. I would recommend it to all.

We stayed at Aaron Shipman House for two nights. The B&B is located about 5 blocks from U Street Metro station (a good 5-10 min. walk).

We were welcomed by Charles, one of the hosts. He was very warm and friendly.

The house itself is absolutely stunning. The owners put their hearts and souls into renovating the house after having bought it in a derelict state in the 70s and the result is impressive.

The B&B is situated in a leafy area of Washington with lots of restaurants (and a Wholefoods Market) around the corner. We loved the area, it had a certain charm to it that was lacking in downtown Washington.

The family style breakfast was a bit awkward on the first day of our stay. We met Jackie, the second host, and about 7 other guests. It's not as bad as it seems though, it's actually quite interesting to meet other people and the breakfast itself is delicious (cooked option, fruit, cake, juice, toast). The second day we even stayed slightly longer at the table to have a chat with other guests.

Other than that: lovely hosts - both Charles and Jackie are good company. They are interesting people with big hearts, it seems. The rooms are clean and the back porch is great to enjoy a drink in the evening. There is free wifi throughout the building.

All in all, we would recommend this place when staying in Washington.
