“Lovely home near the hot bar and restaurant scene”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2014 via mobile

An absolutely lovely place. We stayed here because it is cheaper than hotels on weekdays but the large hotels are priced lower on weekends. The location is not close to monuments or the metro so it depends on what you plan to do in DC. Owner/ management not on premises so it is strictly turn- key with no breakfast or services. That said , the Hingham roomr was lovely and large with shared hall bath. Lots of steps to door and up stairs -- also three more steps to and from hall bath so not recommended if you have mobility issues. We left our car out front for 15 minutes only and it was broken into!!! So although we paid for parking at the guest house we chose to garage it instead. Filed a police report and the officer said that it is a very bad block for break-ins . We did feel safe and relaxed walking in the neighborhood ourselves but felt obliged to share this experience.

I stayed a couple of nights in the B&B, it's extremelly convenient : a stone-throw to the underground station. Very well maintained and clean. It's not quite a B&B as the second B is not fulfilled though you reach Starbucks and a Dunkin Donnut before you're know it.
Highly recommended if you're around.

Room Tip: The Pembroke was on the back of the building, which could be a bit noisy as on hot nights you have p...

I was a little unsure about a "self-hosted" accommodation at first, but getting in and out of the house was simple. I stayed in the efficiency apartment which was very comfortable and private. Accommodations were clean and well stocked. Location was convenient and the neighborhood seemed very friendly. A good place to stay.

Everything worked exactly as promised. Getting into the house proved not too daunting, the shared bathroom was clean and tidy, the bed was firm, the wifi was fine, the reserved parking space was available and very handy once we figured out how to get in and out the back gate. Lovely classic townhouse block with beautiful gardens, peaceful and calm, historic home of Duke Ellington, right around the corner from great 14th Street and U Street bars and restaurants and shops, including a Trader Joe's a couple of blocks away, and the great DC institution Busboys and Poets very close by, as is the U Street Metro stop. Street parking was easy to find on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Easy walk to Dupont Circle, Phillips Collection, Meridian Park -- pleasant half-hour walk to the Mall, Capitol, Verizon Center, etc. Communication was swift and updates of reservation were very quick, even over the weekend. All I'd add is a switch to make the ceiling fan work; mount the outlets high up enough so no need to get under and behind furniture and tangle with multiple extension cords; maybe provide a simple hair dryer in the room or at least the bathroom -- I suppose always a risk someone would steal it but really, would they? Strongly recommend the Cardozo -- will return.

Room Tip: Thought the Duxbury might not be large enough for 2 but it was fine. Next time will try for the Hin...

Great place to stay. Never stayed here before so I relied on the reviews to book the stay. I was not disappointed. The house was clean, quiet, and comfortable. We never ran into anyone else staying in the house, only the Housekeeper Mary who was very nice. I will be staying here from now on when ever I come to DC. U street is a busy street especially on Friday nights, but this only adds to the experience of being a resident of the city while staying at this house. Walking distance to metro, breakfast, resturaunts, and Trader Joes. I would recommend this to anyone.

Room Tip: Norwell is the best, huge room and private bathroom. I did not stay in the other bedrooms but I am s...

It has an unusual arrangement in that the owners are not necessarily there for check-in, but that went without a problem for us. We had one of the rooms with shared bath - it was quite nice. We thought we had the place to ourselves for several days, but met another couple in the living room downstairs and discovered that they had been there two days. They thought we had just arrived, too.

My stay there was excellent. The entire house is immaculately clean and nicely furnished. The bed was firm and comfortable. The only negative aspects of the guest house was the shower head. It provided a spray that mostly went to the sides rather than on the person. Also the guest house did not provide personal toiletries which I found in bad taste. Most hotels and guest houses provide personal size soap and shampoo.
