“Fragrant Flowers Draw More than just Butterflies”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2014

Suppose you ride the escalator from the underground train platform at the Smithsonian Metro Station early one morning at about 8 am. You emerge above ground to see the National Mall at its best in the soft morning sunlight. Then imagine yourself strolling across the Mall to the Museum of Natural HIstory. At this early hour the museum is not yet open to visitors so you peek around the east side of the building and voila, you are in the midst of a garden designed to attract butterflies. The fragrance is delicate and enticing so you continue on your walk along a path laid out with beautiful flowers and succulent plants. Each plant is named and already birds are visiting this habitat created outside the museum. Everything is in motion and few people are here. Just you and the garden and the birds and with a bit of luck, a few early butterfly visitors. Try it.....

“BUTTERFLY HABITAT GARDEN, is NOT the BUTTERFLY PAVILION!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2014

Notes for other TA Reviewers/Readers:

1. The Smithsonian Butterfly Habitat Garden is located OUTSIDE of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and is located on 9th Street, between Constitution and the National Mall. If you exit the museum towards the Mall, the Garden is located on the left side of the building. It looks like a beautiful passage way, with flowers and signs regarding butterflies along the way.

2. The Butterfly Pavilion is located INSIDE the Smithsonian National Museum of the Natural History, at the SECOND FLOOR or level.

3. Entrance fees - FREE for Butterfly Habitat Garden; $6.00 per adult person is charged at the Butterfly Pavilion.

Tips: Enjoy your visit of the Garden. From the various signs displayed in the garden, learn what other flowering plants you can add in your own garden to attract more butterflies. Sit down at one of the benches and admire the beautiful flowers and occasional butterflies flying by.

“Awesome!”

This was my daughters favorite thing to do. The butterflies are beautiful and you can get so close to them. The ladies working there were very helpful and informative.

“Such a treat for children!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2014

We were lucky enough to be here on Tuesday when tickets are free and were able to get them. I have 2 girls, 8 and 5 years old. They were enchanted with this exhibit. Both had butterflies land on them and were excited. There are many different species as well as moths. This was one of their favorite things in DC.

“Loved It!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2014

Located on the second floor of the museum of Natural History. Paid $6.00 for ticket to enter the butterfly habitat (didn't mind because the museum is free). It's a steamy humid environment that is not very big but it is full of plants and butterflies and is quite beautiful. Take care when walking because several butterflies where resting on the floor and almost got stepped on! The butterflies do land on you (you get instructions to shake them off don't touch). You can get a lot of cool pictures just watch your camera when the water mists the air.
