Owner description: As you cruise through the Nation's Capital, past the monuments, White House and American icons, you will receive a great orientation, informative historical and current-day information, heaps of unique and fascinating stories, fantastic photo ops and superb personal service from your guide. The Segway is the first of its kind - a self-balancing, personal transportation device that's designed to operate in any pedestrian environment. It's new, it's cool and a ton of fun!

“A fun experience, but beware...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2008

First, of the fact that they don't allow children under age 16. This put my family in the uncomfortable position of having to leave our 6'0", 15 year old son at the hotel while we went on the tour. Also, beware of the price. I understand that the segways are a novelty, but for four people, it was $280, and the tour doesn't even show you the monuments! Learning about the history of the Smithsonians is less fun than simply riding the segways. Our guide was pretty knowledgeable, and it was a unique experience, but for the price I definitely expected a lot more.

Thanks for recently visiting City Segway Tours of Washington, DC. I wanted to take a brief moment to respond to your review. First, I am sorry for the inconvenience that was caused by our age restriction. The District of Columbia enforces the minimum age for Segway riders and has set that age at 16 years old. We would love to tour with those as young as 12 years old, but obviously are forced to obey the lay of the land. Our other Segway operations (Atlanta, Chicago, Paris, and San Francisco) operate with a 12 year old restriction.

In regards to traveling to see the monuments: the National Mall and the popular monuments (Lincoln, Korean, Vietnam, and World War II), are technically National Park Land and under the watchful eye of the National Park Service. NPS has prohibited Segway use in these areas to maintain the integrity and respect of these memorials. Therefore, we have adjusted our tour to follow these guidelines in place.

We feel that for the $70, you get the best tour in town. Other local Segway tours charge less or more and only tour for two hours.

Thanks for taking the time to review our tour, and hopefully overall you had a good experience.

“Evening tour is great”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2008

Great tour and great fun. The evening tour in the summer when it has cooled down a bit is excellent. After a while you are zipping along like a pro on the Segway, seeing almost all worth seeing. Take the tour at the beginning of your visit to get a good overview of the attractions.

“Tons of Fun”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2008

Although we are locals, we thought it would be fun for the family (2 adults, 2 older teens) to do a Segway tour of the city. I chose the evening tour (6pm - 9pm) in order to avoid the heat of an August day and to avoid a lot of the pedestrian traffic. This turned out to be absolutely the right decision.
We were paired with another family with kids of similar ages to ours to make up a group of 8 and our guide was a college student named John. After watching the required safety video, I think we were all convinced that we would be falling off the Segway at every opportunity, but after practicing in an alley next to the company's office with John, we were fairly confident. By the time our group got to our first stop, the White House, we were extremely confident. Riding a Segway is a lot easier than it looks (no balancing problems) and even more fun than you think it would be. (Halfway through the tour, our kids were ready to start saving up for a Segway instead of a car!)
We made several stops during the tour and John gave excellent commentary. Being longtime residents of the area, we were familiar with the places we stopped and we could tell that John knew his stuff. But his commentary was never like a memorized script--you could tell that he had visited every place we stopped (and more). I think his expertise in and enthusiasm for the area was helpful to the out-of-town family that was in our group. John also offered to take group photos of each of us with our cameras in front of the White House and the Capitol and ours turned out great!
The tour covered a lot of territory, but did not stop at any of the monuments because, as was explained to us, the National Park Service does not allow Segways at the monuments. This was not a big problem since there was more than enough to see on our tour without going to the monuments.
For those who might have reservations about riding a Segway, they are easy to manuver and easy on which to keep your balance. (Even if you can't ride a bike, you can ride a Segway.) The guides don't take you over any terrain which would be difficult for the Segway, so I never felt as if I were going to fall. At the end of the evening, nobody in our group wanted to get off their Segways, so John told us to go ahead and do a "victory lap" in the alley to end the evening.
You will definitely have a good time on this tour and be ready for your face to be sore from smiling so much. I will definitely do this again if we visit another city with Segway tours.

“Worth the money!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2008

My husband and I went on an evening Segway tour on a Friday night. It was awesome! Their orientation, instruction, and guides are exactly what any novice rider need to get comfortable on the Segway. We highly recommend our guide - Matthew - very knowledgeable and helpful. Hit all the highlights and then some. The Segways were lots of fun to ride. The ONLY detractor was a couple of loud-mouthed creeps in a travelling cyclists' group (large group) who obviously had something against Segways as a way to tour the city. I'm sure that was not a normal encounter. If you go, seriously consider the evening tour - especially in the summer - less crowds and better temperature. Definitely worth the money and easier than expected.

“A Blast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2008

This tour was great fun. Once you get the hang of driving the segway(about 15 min) They are a blast to drive. Its a stop and shoot snaps tour. You dont get to go into any of the monuments. There is a lot of walking between monuments in DC. In July at mid-day it can be a little hellish but the segway makes it a real pleasure. Our guide was Karen, who did a fine job. Considering none of us had been on a segway before.
