then see this.Had a really good exhibit on the American Presidents-often large canvas paintings of all the previous incumbents so it was good to gain some knowledge and see some of the lesser known ones.

“American History at its finest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

Must-visit museum that elegantly showcases the diversity of the United States, as well as its dramatic history. A treasure.

“If You Have Time for Only One DC Museum...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

If you have time to visit only one DC museum, then make it this one. I has some of the most interesting and well presented displays of any. We have lived in DC for going on 30 years and this is one of the few - maybe the only one we have gone to more than twice...and we will go again. The area around the museum, which practically sits on a metro stop is surrounded with great restaurants and an excellent hotel, and if you have time left over you can take in the Spy Museum across the street.

“Came for the portraits, stayed for the Lincoln Gallery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

I thought I would love a portrait gallery - it sounds like such a nice idea - but I was done after a floor or so. Thankfully, the other half of the building is the Lincoln gallery, full of American art with varying subject matter, and I loved the contemporary art on the top floor. There are some famous pieces up there! I guess between the two halves of the building there's something for every taste. And best of all, it's free!

“Wonderful Smithsonian secret”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

This museum, also the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, was reopened some years ago after a major renovation. It is off the beaten path of the Mall & the museums there, but still in a very convenient & active location. This was our first trip here, & we were very impressed. The kids enjoyed the layout & exhibits, & the gift shops are very high quality. We bought several things there. The balance between the portraiture & American art is very nice. Stroller access is on the G Street side, & automatic doors are there. Another perk is that unlike the museums on the Mall, this one is open until 7pm. So, you can visit the ones on the Mall first, then head up to this one & finish it all off with dinner at one of the many dining options in this area. Highly recommended!
