“My favorite DC museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

This (and the Museum of American Art in the same building) are a great place to spend a day, Hundreds of portraits of the famous, and also shows of contemporary portraits of the not-so-famous. One thing I especially like about this place is the big covered and air-conditioned courtyard-- a great place to take a break and have some coffee.

“Not to be missed.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

We stopped in here to escape some unexpected snowflakes and were surprised how beautiful it was. We didn't spend too much time here, maybe 45 minutes, the kids do get bored with portraits, painting and sculptures, but even they enjoyed it for the time we were there. Would love to go back without the kids and spend hours here.

Be forewarned; if you do bring your kids you may get watched like a hawk by museum staff (which we encountered to be older stuffy people, sorry no other way to say it) to the point that it may make you a little uncomfortable. I know kids can be kids, but ours at 11 and 14 are not toddlers who were running and screaming- living in the NYC area they are completely used to how to behave at both museums and estate sales, so this was nothing new for them. We felt like we were being followed, maybe it was a slow day and the staff had nothing better to do? Maybe my kids were just so cute they all had to see? I'm sure that why! Just be prepared in case.

“Quiet contemplation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

When you've had enough of the crowds, pop into the Portrait Gallery to see some great art. The different galleries hold collections from ancient to modern--something for everyone--and you can walk through at your own pace to observe the pieces leisurely. We especially enjoyed the portraits of the presidents.

“Retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013 via mobile

Popped in here just to escape the heat. Went straight to the cafe and sat outdoors which was very pleasant. Didn't see any artwork as we had a prior engagement but would liked to have spent more time in the tranquil surroundings.

Went in without planning, Saw great special exhibitions, and really enjoyed myself in the relaxing atmosphere. A place for real contemplation. Also they have a fantastic courtyard.
