“Docent talks were great”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2013

We loved the Portrait Gallery. Did a docent tour which was very informative and helped us see places in the gallery that we went back too on our own. The Emerging Portrait artist exhibition was of special interest. Be aware the gallery doesn't open until 11:30 (and the McDonald's near Verizon Center is pretty sketchy).

“Worth The Visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013

Often overlooked, the National Portrait Gallery features not only the official portraits of every U.S. past president, but amazing portraits of figures in pop culture and "everyday" Americans. This is an interesting glimpse into the people that make up our culture - political, social, economic and more.

“great afternoon spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

Don't get up early they open at 11:30 for civilized folk who need to sleep in and have breakfast. Spend the whole day. Don't overlook the upper floors with more modern and avant garde art as well as a center for art conserving. Fascinating. Enjoy a lovey little lunch in the courtyard cafe. And, at the end of the day when you need a cocktail or a dinner, head across the street to NOPA Kitchen and Bar on F street.

“Don't Overlook This Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013 via mobile

With so many sights and attractions to see and visit in Washington, it could be very easy to overlook this museum. But don't....as it is truly a hidden gem. As frequent visitors to Washington, we are often challenged to see/do something new and today we discovered the National Portrait Gallery. What a great discovery! Actually, you get free admission to tour two...not just one...museums as the Smithsonian Museum of American Art is housed in the same site. We took one docent-led tour of the American Art Museum and did a self-tour of the Portrait Gallery. We particularly enjoyed the contemporary portraiture exhibit as well as the Amelia Earhart exhibit and, of course, the Hall of American Presidents, a guest favorite. it's conveniently located to the Metro (actually directly above it). Just take the Metro to the Galleria-Chinatown station and follow the Arena exit signs. The Gallery will be directly in front of you when you exit on the street.

“Very eclectic exhibit running now - fascinating”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

Virginia - our docent - gave us a one hour tour and took us to an exhibit of art that occurs only once every 3 years. Over 3,000 submissions voted down to 48 and all 48 are on display. Those chosen as first, second and third wouldn't have gotten my vote but they were all fascinating. The Portrait Gallery should be on everyone's "must see" list.
