“History lovers mustn't overlook the National Gallery's many special exhibits like the Pastrana Tapestries!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2012

The latest exhibit, showing the 15th century siege of two seaside Moroccan fiefdoms, featured 2 rooms of gargantuan, exquisite woven Spanish tapestries depicting aspects of the long time struggles between Iberian powers and Moorish mini-states, While planning a trip to Washington, be sure to check the websites for special exhibits at the Gallery, as well as at the American History, Library of Congress and Folger Library, National Archives if you wish to view exhibits along historical themes. They're all free, so you can even return for a second look at a quieter time if you find it too crowded. The Shopping at the Gallery is great for gifts & souvenirs too.

“world class a must if you visit DC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2012

One of the great art galleries in the world. You can spend a full day here. Eat in the Cafeteria (a bit expensive) but allows you to rest and recharge as you see the unbelievable collection.

“Nicely done”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2012

Okay, so I'm a sucker for art museums and probably never gave one a bad rating. I liked the paintings here and since it is connected with the portrait gallery, you are really getting two museums in one. One caution: it doesn't open till 11 AM. Don't be like me. Sleep in or plan someplace to go before it opens. (Hint: We went to Fords theater which was very close).

“Rooms filled with Art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2012

I love this museum with its beautiful, balanced proportions, indoor garden rooms, and of course, the rooms filled with artwork. Be sure to leave time for a visit to the excellent museum shop to purchase gifts for friends, family, or yourself. There are also two very nice restaurants and the indoor garden rooms are wonderful, quiet places to relax and take a break from wandering the galleries.

“Simply the best!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2012

I'm sure there isn't much I can add to other the praise other reviews have offered but, simply put, I will try to mention a few tips for first time visitors.
The Gallery, as you would imagine, is massive. A game plan can help - especially if you are not prepared to dedicate the half day (plus) that it would take to see everything.
The East Building showcases permanent and rotating exhibitions of the finest in contemporary art - the recent Basquiat & Warhol exhibit was mind-blowing - and the West Building pulls together the best of everything else - from ancient art to classics by the masters. The West Building also houses other major visiting exhibitions. Our last visit gave us the opportunity to see a major collection of Picasso drawings and Callahan photographs.
The two are connected by an under-the-street thoroughfare that includes a great gift shop and sprawling cafe/dining options.
Your best bet is to do some research online ahead of time - check out what exhibits will be shown during your visit and determine what your priorities are during your time there.
You'll also want to be sure to save time to take in the impressive Sculpture Garden, just across the street from the West building - this is also home to a small skating ring in the winter, should the mood hit you.
Enjoy - I know I always do!
