I'd highly recommend people take a walking tour with DC Insider Tours as it stops by this memorial. Bo walks you through how the memorial was designed, the conflicts that came up in its creation, and you really get an idea of how it all came together, why its created the way it is, and what it all means.
This memorial, more than any other, really captured the gravity of the men and women who gave all to advance the push for freedom from oppression in this world. When you walk down next to the wall, the sounds of the world fade away and you're left with the heavy senses of sadness, of appreciation, and of the pain so many families continue to feel to this day. The sheer number of names listed is a bit much to take in; that so many people would give up their lives so others could live a better life hangs heavy at this site. The flowers and signs left for these brave soldiers, and the reality that so many people still reel to this day for losing their loved ones, is something you can't forget.
It's a sad atmosphere, but its beautifully done, and a great tool to remember the bravest of our society.
