what a great drive! We really enjoyed the scenery. This whole state has a lot of great things to see but some areas just take it to a new level. This area did it. Saw a few buffalo and dee.

“Very enjoyable drive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013

This road is not one to rush on, in places it can be very narrow, twisty, steep and just plain dangerous, but it's easily worth a drive. The tunnels carved through the hillside are fantastic and as long as you're driving in the right direction, Mount Rushmore is framed perfectly in front of you through each tunnel you drive, it really is a great feat. The scenery is fantastic and there's plenty of places to stop and take in the views and surroundings. Watch for wildlife suddenly appearing at the roadside without warning and darting over the road in front of you, we saw several near misses whilst chugging along.

“The part near Sylvan Lake is the best”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

We drove from Sylvan Lake to Mt. Rushmore on the Needles Highway. The views and formations near the beginning were by far the best. Most of the drive was the same views we had been seeing elsewhere driving around to the major tourist spots. If we had been stuck behind an RV or slow-moving car, this drive would have felt eternal.

“Best of the Black Hills”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

Needles Highway is far and away my favorite attraction in the Black Hills. It is a stunningly beautiful drive; however, it is only good for those who want to truly marvel at the splendor of God's creation. The drive is narrow, steep, and winding and even treacherous in areas. For anyone in a hurry or who is impatient, this is not the way to go. For anyone who loves magnificent scenery and is willing to take the time, this is the only way to go. I recommend taking it south to north.

“Unforgettable Driving Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

The Black Hills has so very much to see and I had just a few days. The Needles Highway, a 14-mile stretch of South Dakota Highway 87, was a good start. This winding, twisting road with narrow tunnels, majestic stone spires and sweeping views of pine forests and valleys really captured the imagination. I was astonished by the fantastically eroded towers of stone that dominated the landscape. I think the Needles Highway is the most scenic of the roads I traveled in the Black Hills of South Dakota and it made for an unforgettable driving experience.
