“Not for tent camping”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2011

Unfortunately this campground, though inside a beautiful park, is just a parking lot for RVs. So we drove farther up the coast and found Rock Creek, a small little campground with beach access.

“Hidden Gem of a park”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2011

I have been here once before and I remembered it quite vividly. So one summer not too long ago when we had the chance to get over to Oregon, I made it a point to go and visit the park. After driving through the park for a bit, there's a beautiful little oceanic cul-de-sac surrounded by bluffs that is easily accessible right off the road. It's a nice spot to grab a bench and take in the scenery. Also, If you wish, there's a good amount of exposed beach there that enables you to go and walk around for a little bit. I'm a big fan of the Oregon coast and i think this place is a nice, little more quieter getaway from the more populated, touristy stops that are along highway 101.

“An amazing experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2009

We just came back from a two week camping trip along the Oregon coast. We spent the second half of our trip at Sunset Bay State Park near Charleston/Coos Bay/North Bend on the south coast.

Aside from the spectacular scenery, this campground offered so much more; tide pools to explore, a beautiful sheltered beach to swim at, a chance to see seals and sea lions on Simpsons Reef, hiking trails and gardens along with terrific campground amenities like beach volleyball courts and picnic areas.

Nearby was the port of Charleston where fresh crab, clams, oysters and tuna was sold right off the boats at the docks. We also checked out the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve about 15 minutes from the park and some pretty cool beaches at 7 Devils State Parks about 45 minutes south near Bandon. Just across Coos Bays is Oregon's famous dunes for the off-roading enthusiasts.

The rangers and volunteer interpretive guides did a great job explaining things on our tide pool walks and also on a hike to an old WW2 bunker. They also had two activities planned every day for children and adults. Park staff kept the washrooms and the campground in general in immaculate condition.

We just got back yesterday and we're already thinking about next summer's vacation to the Oregon Coast and Sunset Bay!
