“Great hiking! Highly recommended!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2014

It's a bit of a drive out from town, but definitely worth it! The park is free to explore and has a lot of trails. I hiked the High Shoals Falls Loop yesterday and it's even better than the pictures. At the entrance of the trails there are bathrooms and a drinking fountain if needed. Along the trail there are various informative signs that explain some of the rocks and animals. There are a lot of stairs to get to the top, but it was a fantastic hike and I'd love to do it again!

“Great...with a mate! [or at least a partner]”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2013

I visited South Mountain State Park for the first time a few weeks ago. The desk staff were very nice and helpful. They were also very knowledgeable about the time and distance of most popular sites. The weather was perfect and clear and the hike was amazing.
My only warning is to make sure this trip is taken with a partner because the hike to the waterfall is pretty strenuous and there are a few instances were I slipped on a rock and there was no one to be found.
Other than this common sense rule I disobeyed it was a great trip and got awesome shots of the waterfall and other areas. Although I saw a family with two young boys, I believe they carried these children in child carrier back packs. I do not suggest children under 10 taking the hike to the waterfall.

This state park is very well maintained. It has multiple hiking trails and the waterfalls are amazing! Nice picnic and camping areas. Great place to spend the day or weekend. We will definitely return!

“Beautiful water fall”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

Another beautiful, well kept NC state park. We hiked the High Shoals Falls trail first. It has a few steep parts but there are plenty of steps and hand rails. Plus there are a few benches along the way in case you need to stop. The trail zig zags along the creek. There are plenty of places to stop and wade in if you wish. Pictures do not do these fall any justice. You really have to see them for yourself. I believe its just a 1.6 mile hike to the top of the falls. We did not do the entire loop. We did try the .7 mile overlook trail after we came down. That was a little disappointing. There are very clean and well maintained restrooms. And plenty of places to grill. I also saw several people trout fishing. And I was a sign that it is stocked.

“What a great surprise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

Beautiful rivers, mountains, waterfalls, trails and there is no entrance fee for day visitors! There is plenty of backcountry for backpacking weekends, and roads are concentrated in one very small portion of the park.
Equestrian use is fine, as is mountain biking.
I was expecting access from the north side, off hwy 64. Access for now is on the southeast side, away from Morganton. Fairly well-marked from Morganton. Could use a couple more signs, coming off I-40.
It is WORTH IT.
