We took Hwy 522 north from Taos, and then NM 196 east out of Costilla. Got to the end of the paved road, and kept going for at least another five miles into some of the most beautiful area we have ever found trout and 'cut-bows' (Go past the RCCLA Rio Castillo park entry). Don't have to be a fisherman to enjoy this, several turn-out areas just to enjoy the scenery and cool mountain air. Rio Castillo water level a foot or 2 below what locals consider optimum if you want to do kayaking. In three hours saw maybe 4 vehicles going further east past our location, was told all must stop when they get to the Ted Turner ranch (600,000 acres, largest contiguous in USA)
