“love the river”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2003

This is the best left in northern new england. We kayak the river several times each year and have been for the last 7 years. I grew up in Northern NH and have just recently returned to live here. There are people on the river but not as many as you would expect. My friends and I worry that it will get worse but the distance helps. The lower part Berlin to Gilead, Maine is catch and release and is quality fishing.
The norther section is where I fish and have been for the past 40+ years. It is big water fishing. There are several drift boats and guides working the river now and seem busy. There are several camping areas and the youth groups keep them busy in the summer with their tripping - nice to see the kids on the river having fun. If I can help anyone , let me know.

First of all, the Androscoggin doesn't empty into Lake Umbagog, it's head waters start at the lake and the lake empties into the river. Second, I agree it's a beautiful place but there are now too many canoes and kayaks that get so close to the loons that they can see the red eyes that there are diminishing numbers of loons and other beautiful water birds. If you go there be respectful, keep your distance and leave no trace. Otherwise, the article was good. PS The eagles didn't nest there this year.
