This was a fantastic vacation! Despite some concern from family members, I think Maine in September was a great place to take our 3 year old and 2 year old boys.

First, we had decided to take the trip because of the great airfare we got on Skybus. I was a little concerned about the airline since it was new, but for $10 per ticket, there was no beating it! The airplane appeared to be brand new, and I would completely recommend Skybus to anyone.

We arrived in Portsmouth, NH late, and made the 1/2 hour drive to Ogunquit, where we stayed at the SeaView Motel. We enjoyed our stay there. They had closed early for the night by the time we arrived, so we had a moment of panic before we realized our key was in a envelope, thumbtacked by the door. It worked out fine. We really enjoyed Ogunquit. We walked down to the sandy beach with no problem, even with the young boys. After walking back, we drove to the Marginal Way, and walked on that. The boys loved climbing on the rocks down by the water.

During naptime, we drove to Mount Dessert Island. THere we stayed at Hanscom's Motel. I wouldn't really recommend this place, however, if you don't need to spend much time in the motel, it wouldn't matter too much. We had a great time at THunder Hole, the sandy beach, and in particular Wonderland. THat was a great area for little boys (and us!). We spent time there on 2 days because we liked it so much. Climbing rocks, playing with rocks, seeing the views, having a picnic, and playing in tide pools. We also walked across the sand bar in Bar Harbor to the island at low tide. We all liked studying and playing with the little shells, etc, that had all been under water here.

One day it rained most of the day in Bar Harbor. THe only thing I wish we'd done differently was to plan more for rain. With the boys, there wasn't as much to do in the rain, and they got a little stir crazy.

After two nights in Bar Harbor, we drove back to NH for our return flight. I'd heard comments that this would be too much driving for only a 4 night trip. It worked great though. We did our driving while the boys had nap times in the afternoon, and it was perfect. It was a great trip. I'd recommend it to any young family.

We went up the coast as far as Camden at the end of September, first part of October. The crowds are gone. The fall colors were just beginning, and there were plenty of warm sunny days to enjoy all the sights. Every hamlet is picturesque, every beach is beautiful and it seems every port is fascinating. The seafood is great. I would recommend a lot of time to see it all and do it justice. We would have liked to have another two weeks to get all the way to Nova Scotia and maybe even Quebec. A definite must see!
