Had such a wonderful time out on Peaks Island in Maine. Rented a house for a bachelorette weekend away. Great house. Loved the quick ferry ride to mainland Portland. Totally recommended for any type of vacation. Next time is couples and kiss and dogs.

( gonna try to sneak up there this Christmas!) A lot to explore, amazing history...... the sunset schooner cruise in casco bay was magical!!! We rented a golf cart for our transportation on the island... what a blast! can't stop thinking about our next visit!!!! SLICE OF HEAVEN......Summer, Fall, anytime would be magical.... made new friends, and anxious to see them again!

“A Must Sea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

When you get off the ferry don't be intimidated by the hills in front of you!! You can go off to the left or right. I suggest the left and just follow the road for 1&1/2 hours and you will find that you have walked around the island. There is plenty to see along the way and the backshore is beautiful with wide open ocean. It is world in itself. There is a small grocery store, a few historic museums, and a lot of flower gardens to explore. You may rent a bike if walking isn't for you. Stop off at Hooligans Market for some great seafood chowder too. However you may only arrive by water taxi or ferry out of Porltland.

Ah! What a delight to see my olde island home being discovered anew every year by ‘summah people.” My family moved there to escape the evils of that mean old city, Portland, way back in 1950.

My siblings and I ended up graduating from Peaks Island Elementary School (still operating) in 1952 and later. For ‘gym’ and ‘shop’ we went on the ferry to sister schools in Portland. Later, for high school, it was ferry everyday to Portland High School. We lived at the then-midpoint ferry stop, Trefethern’s Landing.

After school and in-between we explored the low-tide riches surrounding the island, rowed out to neighboring islands, used our lobster and crab nets to capture dinner from the bay, toured the slightly-marked trails of the island interior, and investigated the massive concrete remnants of World War II’s defensive embattlements — camouflaged and overlooking the back bay.
Like the song says:

”Those were the days my friend, we thought they’d never end.” Enjoy!

“A Terrific Day Trip in Portland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

Peak's Island is part of the city of Portland, and is a 15 minutes boat ride offshore. The ride over and back gives you a great chance to get some spectacular views of Portland and South Portland, including three lighthouses and a number of old military forts built to defend the harbor. The island itself is essentially a small town. There are a few places to eat and pick up a souvenir, but it is not an overly commercialized place. The island is quite dog-friendly, but please remember your leash and waste disposal bags. I'd recommend bringing a picnic lunch and some comfortable shoes and do some walking to explore the island. There are golf carts and bicycles for rent during tourist season as well. A day spent there really opens your eyes to how unique island living can be, with limited supplies, island-only vehicles, and a huge level of dependence upon the sea. The ferry runs at regular intervals during the day (it was about $7 per adult, round trip), so you can make your visit as long or as short as you'd like. When planning a trip to the Portland area, Peak's Island is definitely worth considering.
