“First time visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

I visited with my family back in September. We didn't have a lot of time to see the park, but even just a few hours is worth the visit. The rangers on site were very knowledgeable. It was very cool that you could get up so close to the cliff dwellings and even get down into some of the pits.

“700 years ago they lived here for 700 years”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Mesa Verde Cliff Palace was discovered by local ranchers in 1888. Fortunately for all of mankind, in 1906, United States President Teddy Roosevelt established this park to "preserve the works of man". We are most fortunate. The Pueblo Native American Indians lived here for A.D. 600 to 1300, similar to the Anasazi Indians at Manitou Springs. Cliff Palace has 150 rooms plus 75 open areas. A KIVA, is a room used for spiritual ceremonies. There are 21 of them here. The rest is dedicated to living space, cooking and storage. Plan on spending most of the day here as the historical and cultural richness of this area is something that cannot be realized in a hour or two. This is IMPORTANT, it is our heritage. These people were here hundreds of years before European explorers came to this country. Respect it. Take away nothing but your memories, photographs and cultural enrichment. You will have a better understanding of how the ancients lived and you will then fully appreciate how far we have come indeed. This is run VERY WELL by the National Park Service.

“Incredible! Must see this!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

Mesa Verde is a true gem of a park. The preserved ruins are very well-maintained and are a must-see. All tours are guided by NPS rangers, who have encyclopedic knowledge of the site and a sense of humor. Be sure to visit the sites at a time that the sun hits the ruins- some can be overshadowed if you go at the wrong time. When you get to the park, sign up for the tours first and this will structure your day.

Spruce House is at the visitors center and is self-guided, so it can always be a "Plan B" if some of the more interesting sites are booked.

FYI- One ruin required that you climb 30 feet up the side on a tree branch ladder- much safer than it sounds and was fun for my 8 year old. Another required that you crawl through a small opening to exit the ruin- almost didn't fit with my camera backpack. Both said that they were physically strenuous, but this is strenuous by American standards so I made all the tours without dying (but did huff and puff a bit on the way up the steep stairs).
