Thoroughly enjoy this train. Have taken from Sacto to SLO and back several times and it's been good each time. I usually sit in the observation car for the whole trip and like that better than the assigned seating. Staff always nice at the stations and on the train. This is my train of choice when visiting SLO!

“Amtrak, lighten up”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2013

Just took the train from Oxnard , Ca to Seattle ...the train was on time and a little early to most destinations ,but the Parlour car was missing , food was blah , but you have to remember , it's a train ! But what really dropped the ride 1 star was the rigidness of the employees , most people taking this train are on vacation and don't appreciate being told to be quiet while wine tasting , we also might like to sit by ourselves at our own table if space permits , what does it matter ? Most of the employees were delightful , but a few were maybe a little burned out . it happens ...

“Coast Starlight - Pros and Cons”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

Took the Coast Starlight from LA to San Jose for a business trip (actually started in Oceanside and took the Pacific Surfliner up to LA) and back again. We booked a Roomette for an additional $100 and it was worth every penny. This kind of train travel should be on everyone's bucket list!

Pros - 1. Great scenery-from either side of the train (but especially to the west), just beautiful and not to be missed. 2. Private and comfy accommodations with access to the Palour Car if you want a more public experience. 3. Included meals, coffee, fruit - made up for the additional cost; 4. Nice personal service--you are a "first class passenger"--from a friendly welcome to lots of amenities--and treated as such,(hey, if it's good enough for John Travolta it's good enough for me); 5. Transport to and from the first class passenger lounge in LA directly to your car and more snacks. 6. No need to drive, go through security, sit in a tiny seat, and be restricted from moving around. This is a relaxing if time consuming way to travel. If you have swelling issues, at lease you can stand up, move around, lay down, or generally change position. 7. Wine and cheese. Just fun.

Cons - 1. Small spaces, okay for me and hubby but would have been awful for my 6'2" 280 lb son to navigate. The stairs were very narrow and it was hard to carry our two carryons to the cabin (leave at least one downstairs!), and some of the passages through the car were shoulder to shoulder withour heads touching the ceiling. The roomette was just right for us, but would have been cramped with someone larger, and there is limited space for luggage. 2. Restrooms - basically rolling port-a-potties. They do their best to keep them clean (downstairs ones are nicer than the upstairs that gets used more), but after twelve hours and 20 or so users, you get the idea. 3. Being on the wrong side of the train. There is no way to know which side of the train you will be on, and the side facing west has the better view. If there is an open room and you have a friendly attendant, they will let you swap when you get on. 4. Time. It is a LONG trip, and you have to expect delays (2 hours to San Jose, none coming back). Despite the fact that you can sleep it is very tiring, especially if you spend lots of time talking to other passengers.

“Stuck on the starlight!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

We really looked forward to this trip. At the moment (3:20 AM) we are 9 hrs late to our destination. Our train is stuck behind a broken freight train. Don't know how long we'll be stuck here or why they can't find some way to get us going. No info since before midnight from the crew. Ain't seen a conductor in hours. The amtrak phone folks say to call cust relations "when you're done traveling."

“A cruise on rails!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

Taking the Coast Starlight up the coast of the Pacific Northwest was on my "bucket list" and it did not disappoint. Being in a sleeper car is the way to go! Each car has it's own personal attendant, and Gabriel was fantastic! You arrive to champagne in your room, and their is a complimentary wine and cheese reception in the afternoon. There is a glass topped parlor car for sleeper car guests, as well as a dining car. The meals are more than adequate and food is included. From Union Station in Los Angeles, Day 1 includes a rarely seen view of the coast and rolling hills of central California. On Day 2, you awaken in the beautiful forests of Oregon, with snow capped mountains and waterfalls. Great for romance, retired folks, and even families. One drawback: I didn't sleep extremely well, but it is only one night and well worth it to step back in time to luxury, service, and natural beauty!
