“Interesting and away from the crowds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

We were cutting through the Preserve from Las Vegas to Twentynine Palms. It was a nice surprise. It had a very dense area of Joshua trees that rivals what you see at the National Park. There's a volcanic area with cinder beds. In the middle is Kelso, with refreshment and bathrooms. If you find yourself in the area, I would definitely visit.

“Amazing scenery of the Southwest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012 via mobile

A pretty remote location but for someone that has not spent a lot of time in the Southwestern USA it was a pretty amazing landscape. The Kelso dunes were really amazing and the views from the top were really impressive. We drive north to the Kelso Depot, a good place to stop for a snack and some water. The museum was GREAT, with exhibits on the wildlife, the history of the railroad, the mining and geology if the area, and the settlers that inhabited the area. We drove on a 2-wheel drive unpaved road which wasn't too bad to the Rings Loop trail. A great little loop but did require some climbing... if you can't climb a ladder easily then this trail is not for you. Overall a great day trip!

“A great scenic route”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

Driving from Twenty Nine Palms to Las Vegas takes you through Mojave. We stopped at Kelso, where you could get food at the Depot and have a wander around the visitor centre. It was all very pleasant to drive through with some great vistas on the way but there didn't appear to be the same small walks / loops that you found in Joshua Tree NP.

“nice place to stop”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012

We stopped at Kelso deport on a way to Palm Springs. That was a real oasis in a desert. The outside temperature was over 110 F, so we enjoyed to stay in an AC cooled building. The building is a visitor center and a museum with very good, educational exposition. We really enjoyed to talk to park rangers who we found very knowledgeable about a local history and courteous.

“A great escape”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

The Mojave National Preserve is a beautiful desert landscape that can give you peace, quiet and solitude. You can hike across sand dunes in the morning, and enjoy the sunset over a Joshua Tree woodland at night. The range of habitats all within park boundaries makes this a perfect place to visit if you want to experience the different ecosystems found in the desert, and possibly even spot some wildlife (and during spring, some wildflowers!). You can either go for a hike on your way to Vegas/Los Angeles, drive (responsibly) on one of the 4x4 trails, or (preferably) stay the night and camp at one of the campgrounds.

What I wish the Preserve would work on in the future is developing and adding better marking for some of the hiking trails. The more you get out of your car, and out into the desert on foot, the more you will see, experience, learn, and enjoy. Visit the Preserve website to plan your trip, find hiking trails, and always take precautions when hiking in the desert (bring water, sunscreen, let folks know where you are going, etc).

A must see during your visit is the Kelso Depot, in the center of the Preserve. There is a visitor/information center there, a gift shop, and the "Beanery", a coffe shop/diner that serves up great sandwiches. You can also grab a gatorade or soda here to quench your thirst after a hike.
