Read some mixed reviews but rolled the dice...and it paid off!!! What a spot for the $.
Nicely manicured grounds.
Clean (not fancy) rooms.
Excellent beach (perfect depth & variety of sea life for the beginner snorkeller).
Exceptionally friendly staff (as long as you are friendly as well).
Good activities (could use another pool table and ping pong table).
Decent kids club & mini disco - the kid's staff were amazing!
Lots to see & do without having to leave the resort.
The shows were pretty good.
Nice vendors each day at the resort for souveniers but they do not pester you.
Excursions close by.
Acceptable/expectable food for Cuba. Nice fresh fruit selection.
Drinks and Beer were very good and the pool bartenders are entertaining!
Heard some people whining and complaining about the odd thing here or there like:
The food (of course). If you are looking for fine dining and being waited on hand and foot like you are Royalty then pay triple and go elsewhere. Make smart choices - if a particular offering appears undercooked for your liking, don't eat it...for example: I only saw this once and it was when they brought out a seemingly nice whole turkey. They cut into it and it was nearly raw once they got deeper toward the middle. The carver immediately sent it back to the kitchen and I don't think it reappeared, so it's not like they don't care. We had no major issues with the food. Decent selection, nice presentation, a la cartes were good (only had the Grill and Italian Restaurants). Good little pizzas, fish & chips and I didn't mind the burgers but I asked for them well done. Omlettes & Pasta Stations were a crowd favorite as the line ups indicated. But I tipped despite the wait because the staff work tirelessly and always with a smile.
Bugs!?! Yes there are bugs! They do bite! The bites itch! Guess what? Have a look at the Google Maps aerial satelite view of this resort - it's in a forest! I did not use bug spray at all and I did not get more than a few mosquito-type bites but a couple others in our group got several more than I did. There are mini mosquitoes which seem to bite on contact and really small flies resembling black flies but even smaller (no-see-ums?). The could potentially be sand fleas here or there but that is unconfirmed. I also looked in our room for the signs but did not see a trace of bed bug evidence. If you are worried we recommend you bring the Polysporin brand liquid itch lotion - it worked like a charm for parties in our group who got some bites.
Our son, 5 yrs, did have an odd reaction to a bite on his leg and one on his chin where a large area swelled up and became firm to the touch. It was weird but was gone in a couple of days...didn't seem to affect him much at all.
Slow service! Guess what? It's Cuba...like any other tropical destination the people are laid back and easy going but always serve with a smile, taking their time to ensure a pleasurable experience each and every time they serve a guest because unlike many people in faster paced societies they appreciate their jobs and are very proud to be where they are...and it shows. Be courteous and friendly, appreciate that you are on vacation, and don't be in a rush and you will see their genuine good nature and receive great hospitality with a smile.
Too many stairs? If you are elderly, obese, disabled and/or have children in strollers this could be an issue but for able-bodied people, complaining about the stairs would only say something about your character...fill in the blanks: L - Z Y !!!
One item of contructive criticism I can offer is for the Hotel to have a weekly itinerary letting guests know what is going to be happening and when because things just seem to happen and sometimes you miss out on stuff and hear about it later or stumble upon activities as they are already going on...a weekly itinerary or daily activity boards displayed at various places around the resort would be very helpful.
All in all the resort is not perfect but it is definitely a great spot for the value and ya, okay, you could whine and complain about petty things on virtually every vacation but, overall, we had a great holiday at the Riu Playa Turquesa!
