Travel to the Hotel from the airport takes about 1 hr 20 mins by bus plus the wait for other guest to get their bagage, or an hour by taxi. and cost about £50 return. we took the taxi and thought it was worth the extra money, after the long flight, and got to the hotel first.
The General set up of the hotel is excelentt, we where met in reception with a cold towel and a fizzy drink. filled out a very small form, and delivered to our room by electric cart. All The staff where very good and helpful, all where polite and genuinely seemed to want to make the holiday one to remember, i didnt tip during the holiday, but gave lots at the end.
We had a standard suite room in block 11, A great size room with a split level to a stting area with table, chairs and a shaise lounge marking the devide, (some pictures attached) it has a small balcony with table and chairs, (8 standard rooms per block, 2 floors) the bathroom and changing areas are a reasonable size, clean and functional, perhaps the bath area was a little tired but everything worked well.. on the whole a very good room, with Tv, CD/radio player, small fridge with beer, fizzy drinks and water. coffee machine, beach towels, safe, iron and board, umberella, toiletries (shampoo, shower gell, body lotion, showercap, soap, shoe shine, needle set) lastly and its a first for me... free room service, you get a small and quit basic snacks and drinks menu in the room, any time 24 hr free service.
The superior suite rooms where a little bigger and in blocks of 2 on the ground floor, they have a hammock outside the back, and have an outside shower, these where located on the sea side of the hotel or on the lakeside of the hotel. Personally i perferred the newer and non smoking ones by the lake, they have nice lawns and the palm trees make it look like your own garden. The sea view ones (older, lots of small trees in the way and rough ground (old coral) i think if you got in these hammocks you will get eaten alive (lol) in fairness i didnt see anyone in a hammock. bring repellant, some people did get bitten.
We went to the royal service and checked out the rooms , area and restaurant and there is no question its lovely, however.. the rooms (semi detached or in 4s , 2 up 2 down) are only a little bigger, and the Tv a little bigger, its all very new looking, the bathroom is fab with whirlpool / jaquzzi type bath for 2 ! and a buttler runs the bath if you want him 2. and you get a menu of pillows to pick from. The royal service bar and restaurant where lovely looking, but very quiet, to the point of far too quiet, The menu which we looked at was nearly all fish, we where told this menu didnt change for evening meals, but i hope it does for anyone staying.
Back to the main hotel.. and restaurants. the general set up is 4 named ala cart and the buffet.. guests can use each of the alacart restaurant once, each week, and the rest of the evening dinners in the buffet, or pay 15 pesos extra each, to upgrade and go to the royal service restaurant, we looked but didnt do it in the end. 1. Japaneze restaurant, looked lovely, we didnt use it, but most peple seemed to like it. 2. Mediteranian restaurant (we went twice), i really like this one, nice reception area for a drink before and then taken though to a lovely dining room with live and gental music. lovely atmosphere , air conditioned, good food, loved the steak 3. Le bobia (cuban) open sided, live cuban music, very much like a greek taverna, great food, although i thought small potions, (but i like my food). 4. Le patio, beside hotel reception, very nice food, live violen playing, enclosed airconditioned room, good food. Generally all the restaurants served similar good quality food. 5. Lastly the main buffet restaurant. We have had many buffet meals over time and at lots of hotels, this is one of the best if not the best. Hot food, lots of it and good choice from all meals breakfast, lunch, and dinner, never have we seen a place with so much Lobster, shrimps or beef on offer, or you can choose to have the chef cook food for you, lots of choice even with the (freshly cooked)
Beach and Pool bars, lunch and snacks, These all opened around 10. 1030, snack menu from 1030 till 5 and lunch 12.30. till 3, good simple food well cooked , in the pool lunch restaurant you can see your food cooked, you can sit and look over the pool or the lake behind the hotel. The beach lunch restaurant and drinks area look over the beach and are lovely.
Nicely spread out into 3 /4 areas even though its just one pool really, only 50 meters from the beach. A nice blend of sunbeds, beds with thatched umbrellas, huts and cabanas, , with a nice swim up or walk in bar at its cente. Generally ok fro getting sunbeds etc but the cabanas went very quick... no towels before 7am, 7.03 cabana s gone, we got them twice, very very comfortable.
The hotel is spread over a quite large area, mainly because the blocks or rooms are well devided with nice paths and gardens, The reception too the beach is about 350 meters, on gentle sloping pathways, i think its quiet suitable for wheelchair users, i noticed quitea few ramps in the slight slit level in the reception, bar ,restaurant areas. and good access around the pool.
Evening entertainment was either singing and or live music in and around the main 24 hr bar.. (which seemed to serve everyone quickly) and then about 9.30 there was entertainment on stage, mostly dance, cuban, international, and even ballet.. i loved the thiller dance.
The ballet was more interesting than clasic. A board outside the buffet showed the entertainment for that day.
The animation team, tended to be in the background mostly near the pool, now and then you heard them trying to talk people into, beachvolleyball, archery, air rifle shooting, etc,
you can have a go at scuba diving in the pool and when they say your up too it, you can go off the beach in the next resort over (free bus provided), or boat dives if you have a licence with you. And its all free... never had free diving before.
Lovely beach with soft white sand, not too busy, im guessing 5 or 600 meters long, good for swinning off and snorkling, nice coral bits near the beach and the usual colourful fish, but not fantastic snorkling.. but im very fussy.
Not to much to report really. The worst thing is the pricing of the hotel spa. its a nice place and very comfortable however its just far to expensive. His and her together massage. 232 pesos. about £200 or a 50 min massage 98 pesos.. £78. Some treatments, haircuts and manicurs etc are reasonabley priced. We enjoy massage and spa treatments, but gave up on the idea, some people haggled and got reduced prises, however on check out the man in front of us was charged full price even though he insisted he aggreed 20 % off.
The spa in the next hote, about 10 min walk away is much much cheaper, His and her massage 50 pesos.. £35 (total) or 50 min individual massage 35 pesos £25.
tried both and both where very good, the treatment rooms where smaller but had nice relaxing music to stare at the floor by. Not as plush as paradisus spa, but generally a third or quarter of the price.
The only other minor thing i can think of. We got up early every day, had breakfast, then went down to the pool or beach, The drinks bars that end didnt open till 10, so no tea, coffee or anything else for a couple of hours, i brought water from the room fridge.
Overall a very good hotel. deserves 5 star, and i recomend it to anyone, we will go back soon.
