“Tired room to palace”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2014 via mobile

Having recently returned from Paradisus after having a wonderful holiday, we started off in a room in block 38 which was a little tired and needed a refurb, we used the main beach but there was always a problem getting a sun bed with shade and was quite crowded, people must have been coming down in the morning before 7 a m reserving them and leaving them for hours, you would think this problem could be addressed by the management to stop this happening, we then decided to upgrade to a garden villa for the last few days which was amazing, all the restaurants and staff are great and nothing is to much trouble to make your holiday special.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

We flew December 28th on Sunwing, and stayed for ten days. It was dark when we arrived, and we know the road is bad, so we opted for a 40peso taxi ride to the resort. That worked out fine.

Check-in was low-key and friendly. Suite 3332 has an excellent location. The ocean view is through a small planting of young trees. Our room was across the road from the pool, and right along the path to the ocean and beach. It’s also on the same road as the spa and fitness center. The yoga area sits among the trees.

It’s a lovely, well-maintained room. The lounging area is lower, and separated from the bedroom area by two steps of dark tile. The valet was quite clear in reminding us to be careful in not tripping as we descended the stairs. From a guy’s point of view, you could reduce this hazard with a two-foot strip of coloured duct tape, or a paint stripe, applied to the top stair’s edge. Be careful.

One room feature we did enjoy was a locked glass patio door opening from the bathroom into a walled-in garden area where you could shower. The patio door lets a lot of light into the bathroom, with the high walls guaranteeing privacy. We really enjoyed showering “outside”, and it was also handy for washing and drying out our snorkelling gear.

A red beach flag killed our New Year’s Day plan to go snorkeling. We took advantage of the wonderful spa for 78 pesos per person. It’s a great deal because you can start using the facilities starting at 9:30am, have your massage, and continue using the facilities until 5:30pm. Everything was modern and in working order. It’s as chichi as any other spa. Lots of zen quiet. Staff was very attentive and friendly. Felix and Yoandra provided wonderful, relaxing massages. The spa has its own “quiet” beach and it’s fun to look at the rock fossils at low tide. They also have a saltwater pool, and a real Jacuzzi. It’s definitely a serene place, with lots of opportunities to sit and contemplate the views. Worthy of particular mention is their spa attendant, Zaidi, a perky, energetic lady who magically appears to tend to your needs. She welcomes you, provides refreshments, and generally makes you glad you’re at the spa. A real treasure.

We enjoyed the spa twice, and recommend it without reservation.

We dined in the main dining room, as well as the Japanese, European, and Cuban restaurants. We thought the food was great. Rolando is your go-to chef at the dining room grilling station. His fish and seafood are excellent. He suggested the Panga fish. I had never heard of it, but I’d certainly eat one again. It was delicious.

There’s no point in going over every crouton. We disagree with those reviewers who claimed the resort was only good if you like seafood. They did have excellent seafood, as well as steaks, pork, and chicken. Vegetarians could easily find stuff to eat. There’s nothing more to say.

We can’t comment on the chipped paint in the pool. We never went near it. What is the point of paying for a resort like this to sit around a pool? (pool bar excepted). We hit the beaches every day.

We tried this resort because of its excellent snorkeling reputation. Most snorkeling excursions spend a lot of time shuttling people to and from the snorkeling point. You spend little time actually snorkeling. If you want to snorkel a lot on your vacation, this place is for you. At high tide, you can enter at the spa beach and reach the coral reef within less than 100 feet. For something different, we snorkeled from the spa beach all the way over to the main beach. Now that was fun.

One section of the main beach is problematic due to the rocks that make it impassable. They have cleared a path to get into the water, but it’s hard to see at higher tide. We recommend water shoes when using this area. The beach area around the water sports shack is fine.

There is one snorkeling excursion we cannot recommend for Paradisus guests because you end up paying twice. An early shuttle picks you up, as well as people at various other hotels. Hotel Guardalavaca is the last pickup before travelling to the marina. You spend about 30 minutes aboard a catamaran, then anchor not far off the shore of Hotel Guardalavaca. You can guess what’s coming next.

We continued in the catamaran and then stopped offshore of Paradisus Rio de Oro. At that point, swimming ashore wasn’t an option. It’s incredible that we paid big bucks to stay at Paradisus for the snorkeling, then ended up paying 70 pesos each to be taken back to our own hotel beach. In fairness, both locations have excellent snorkeling, and lunch was good. Unless you are booked at another hotel with no reef, do not book this trip. The reef is wonderful right near the shore at Paradisus. For more excitement, just swim further.

A second excursion to an island, the “safari” trip, starts with a long bus ride. It was fun to be driven around in a Russian jeep to visit exotic animals. Lunch was ok. The beach was lovely. The snorkeling part was no hell. We found few fishes, and lots of dead coral.

Be advised that the two aforementioned excursions have absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the Paradisus Rio de Oro.

We’re of two minds about this resort. Paradisus hotels are the best in the Melià chain. This one is no exception. Location, infrastructure, gardens, amenities, food, and staff are all first-rate. We can’t think of any other resort where you can walk out to the reef for snorkeling. And if you’re also looking for peace and quiet, this is the resort for you. But the resort is just a little too quiet for us. And based on comments we’ve heard in the pool bar, it seems most returning guests like it that way. You can even find a sign on the way to the spa that says, “We honor silence”. That quiet policy is too much for us. For many other guests, it's just the way they want it.

Of the 28 times we’ve been to Cuba, this is the first time we heard a string quartet play in a resort lounge. They were very good, but that’s not the point. We go to Cuba to dance in front of live bands playing Cuban music. The lounge featured many different entertainment acts during our stay. But few played dance music, and almost nobody danced but us. Even the disco we visited on a couple of occasions was barren of excitement. Other reviewers have noted how quiet the resort is. Some rave; others rail. Be sure to read those reviews carefully!

Our personal noise level preference aside, this is a lovely resort, and we did have a wonderful time staying here. Paradisus Rio de Oro is definitely worth a visit.

Room Tip: Room 3332 has it all: ocean view, close to pool, on path to beach

First time at this resort and would go back in a heartbeat. Had a problem with the ceiling in the bathroom leaking thanks to Nayilet (guest services) who showed up 5 minutes after calling we were moved to a new room. The beach was amazing lots of snorkeling for those who enjoy it. The pool was large but if you want a seat you have to get there early. the buffet has a great selection but I found the service was slow. To fix that maybe a couple more servers would help. The a la cartes dinners were great with amazing service. I found talking to a lot of the guest they were repeat visitors returning 5 6 7 times. So like I said I will be heading back there soon. Hope this helps

My husband I was guests at the Royal Service section of the hotel and I can see how the saying chalk an cheese comes to mind.
The rooms are amazing very large extremely clean thanks to Ann Marie the towel sculptures where amazing a shame to take apart
Our butler Raul, was the most attentive person you could wish to meet, absolute ambassador to the hotel he is wasted as a butler he has so much potential to do so much more.
The food at the Royal Service restaurant was very good well cooked and well presented at all meals
Drinks were of a very good quality and good selection
The beach was very clean at all times Analdo on the beach was very attentive never without a drink fetches your sun bed for you and organise lunch on the beach if required.
We did venture to the main hotel a few times for the bank and to use the a la carte restaurants the best being the Japanese (especially the show table)
We did have a small incident whilst we were there but Norma the Royal Service manager dealt with it very quickly and very efficiently
On closing I would say spend that extra bit on the holiday and go Royal Service it is worth every last penny as the main hotel looks to be very tired and need of an upgrade
Nothing was to much trouble for any one
Please remember to change your money to single paso as the staff really appreciate and deserve your tips

Room Tip: The best rooms are the ocean view rooms, we stay 8523 and the view was out of this world, nice bid ba...

This is only the second time we have been to Cuba so I havent got a lot of experience of the country and its hotels to compare. All i can say is that we stayed at the Playa Pesquero 3 years ago and loved Cuba so much we had to return , albeit to an Adults Only resort .
FLIGHT
We travelled with Thomas Cooks mainly because it was the cheapest deal around at the time. The flight included a meal plus a snack which was fine , an alcoholic drink each and headphones for the inflight entertainment. The choice of entertainment wasnt particularly inspiring but the food was adequate . As Thomsons arent going to Cuba later this year you havent got a lot of choice re your tour operator. The flight was on time and as we had already completed our visas beforehand , there were no hitches ! However some people who were on our flight and were staying at the Paradisus were contacted a few days before the holiday and asked to spend their first night at the Playa Pesquero ! They were given a good compensation package( including a Spa massage, a meal at the Royal Service , plus cash ) although they lost a day of their holiday in effect !

ROOM
We had emailed the hotel prior to the holiday and asked for an upper floor refurbished room with a wrap around balcony and initially we got all we wanted apart from a refurbished room ! The bathroom was in need of a makeover but this is only a small niggle and wasnt worth complaining about as the room itself was lovely with a huge bed ,very clean and quiet !The fridge is topped up daily with soft drinks and beer . You can order room service anytime which is free and there is a varied menu. We were contacted several times by Customer Services to ensure all was ok and then given a refurbished room after a few days as we had originally requested ! The only difference we could see between the 2 rooms was that the bath has been replaced by a modern walk in shower which was wonderful !
TIP- Do email the hotel beforehand with your room request as they do listen and take notice ! Also if youre not happy with anything do speak to Customer Services as we found them very cooperative and ' on the ball'!

FOOD & DRINK
The buffet here is ok with a good choice of meat, fish , pasta etc. cooked fresh in front of you for evening meal ! However often the dishes of rice, potato etc were not particularly hot and as the dinner plates arent heated the meal was sometimes almost cold before you started ! Breakfasts are the usual fare with fried eggs at the cooking station and numerous other goodies to please every palate ! My own favourite meal was at lunchtime being the pizza at the pool bar or fish in batter at the beach bar .The setting at both the lunchtime venues is lovely ! In addition of course are the 4 a la carte restaurants, our personal favourite being the Japanese which was wonderful !You can book them all once a week or pay for a meal at the Royal Service if you want . There are also other food options during your stay like a twice weekly beach BBQ which was nice . We never had any problems getting a decent drink ,although some top shelf spirits may not be available. We often rang Room Service ( free 24 hours ) for a bottle of 'Champagne' for our room and this was always delivered very promptly !
TIP- Do book your a la cartes as soon as possible ( either email Pablo beforehand or visit him at his desk in the foyer ) as they do get booked up very quickly ! He is very helpful and will do his best to accomodate your request.

ENTERTAINMENT
There are plenty of things going on during the day time ( nature walks ,archery, rifle shooting, water volleyball, aqua aerobics , dance lessons ,boules etc )but do check the notice boards as the Animation Team are not ' in your face ' and you may miss something you wanted to do ! There are also outside artists bought in like the Water Ballet team who perform in the pool weekly and are wonderful to watch if you get a chance ! In the evenings there are loads of Cuban bands like the 3 Amigos , a fabulous girl band and the rock guitarist so plenty to watch if you so desire ! There is other evening entertainment like a fashion show , a pianist, and a dancing competition to keep you amused .

BEACH & POOL
We are not beach people so didnt spend much time there. We did walk it a few times though and it does appear that the sand is returning following the hurricane of a couple of years ago. The pool is huge and the water looked clean to us though the bottom of the pool does need repainting and refurbishing . I believe this is supposed to be happening later this year ( dont know the date ) and may well cause an issue if you are staying at the PRDO then !
TIP The staff at the pool bar are great and will suggest a cocktail if you want to try something different.
TRIPS
We had been to Cuba before so didnt want to do much this time around. However the horse and carriage ride from outside the front of the resort is very cheap, and great fun ! We also did the trip into Holguin, train ride and Cigar factory last time which we can recommend as it does give you an insight into Cuban life !
ROYAL SERVICE
We decided to upgrade to Royal Service for our last 3 nights for a treat as there was a good deal available at about half the price Thomsons and Thomas Cooks charge up front . The room we got was top floor and was fabulous with a jacuzzi bath and outside shower ! The butlers are not ' in your face' although they will fetch and carry for you if you want that sort of thing. It is a different world there , very quiet and a lovely relaxing way to finish your holiday !
TIP If youre thinking of upgrading for a few nights it may be worth waiting til you get here like we did as they do offer better deals . However you do run the risk that Royal Service may be full when you get there and so no rooms are available.
SPA
We had a day in the spa with a ' Couples Massage' which was wonderful . You can use all the facilities all day , including the pool, sauna etc . You get 30% off if your in Royal Service as we were and is well worth the money. !

GENERAL
The majority of people staying here were either Canadians or from the UK so we made lots of new friends . Being an Adults Only resort there were no children around and the majority of people staying here are older Couples ! The weather was lovely, mid 80's during the day and still warm at night . There were a few showers about but they were only short term and soon cleared up to leave cloudless skies ! The resort is set amongst many trees and countryside so there are snakes, spiders, crabs etc about but we didnt see any !
What makes this hotel special are the staff who are so friendly and do everything they can to make your stay enjoyable. Many people return year after year and I can see why.I am sure we will come back again at some stage in the future . As we left we were serenaded by 'The Three Amigos ' a lovely touch and a great end to the holiday .

Room Tip: Email the hotel in advance with your room request

would like to say that i read some negative reviews and was worried before my holiday, but i found it to be 2 weeks inn heaven!

first i like to start about the hotel it self, i found it very clean and big, alot of options at d a la carte restaurant and bookings to the others could be done o the day, considering the fact that we went Christmas period.

the employees were friendly and extremely helpful and appreciated any tips that were left. the activities in the hotel were great and the water ballet done twice during our stay was spectacular.

we stayed in room 2017 and did not have the best view but to be honest could not care much as we did not send too much time in there, apart from that the room was kept clean everyday by Gabriela.

we went on several excursions and apart from the day trip in holguin we enjoyed all. would advise anyone looking to do some activities to try the island cruise a whole day spent out and getting tanned and seeing the beauty of cuba.

we hope to return to this hotel soon, i'm willing t help anyone who has questions.

Room Tip: rooms closer to the reception seem to get more noise

My husband and I were here from Feb 1-8th. Had a great time. Special thanks to Nayliet (guest services) and Rolando (our favorite breakfast guy). Changed our room to 4221 so we could have a bathtub, received excellent service all around. The food was good, excellent selection, a la cartes great, loved the lobster! Would return to this resort.
