“Awesome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2014 via mobile

Our stay was totally awesome. From the cleanliness to the food to the service everything was perfect. Staff are very accomodating to any requests. Beach and pool very nice. Quiet, not a big party place but that was fine for a relaxing vacation. Food at the buffet and a la cartes was excellent. Cannot think a bad thing to say. Highly recommend this resort

Just returned last night from Paradisus. Have travelled to many 5 star adult only resorts in DR, Cuba and Mexico and loved this one. Definitely will go back.

Pros:

Fabulous snorkeling right off the beach. Equipment available to borrow for free.....we used the fins every day!
Diving was also included. The divers we met were very happy with their training and experiences.
Catamaran rides were so much fun.....and included in the cost. Captained by professional sailors who are willing to tailor your ride to your wishes. We had many thrilling and safe rides regardless of weather. Lifejackets provided.
Great beach with fine, white sand and turquoise water.
Lots of space on beach; easy to access loungers at any time of day...can find a romantic area away from others or join in and chat with other tourists...the choice is yours.
Restaurants and bars are plentiful and conveniently located....with enough diversity to make each one individually attractive. Food was great.....ate lots of fresh seafood. Fabulous service at the restaurants....tipping was very much appreciated. Best beef tenderloin at the Japanese restaurant, exceptional service and ambiance at El Patio and the Mediterranean restaurant.
Buffet is a great option for those not wanting to make reservations...lots of fresh food, variety, good service.
Without a reservation, we were still able to get into the restaurants we wanted to by checking with the restaurant directly at dinner time and being flexible about the time they could accommodate us. Usually we were able to get in within 30 - 45 minutes and enjoyed a drink at the lobby bar while waiting.
Entertainment is much like other Caribbean resorts...highlights for is were the aqua ballet in the pool, circus stage show and the dance competition and ALL of the pre-dinner shows at the lobby bar..great musicians!

Our room in building 29 was fabulous. Close to the restaurants and bars etc...yet very quiet. Always well cleaned by Elana, and lots of space with a big balcony, sitting area, canopied bed which was very comfortable.
High quality gym with a view overlooking the ocean.
Spa has its own private beach and amazing views.

We visited the royal service area....walked through the grounds, beaches and ate at the RS restaurant. Very good but quiet.... perfect for those seeking a romantic get a way in a secluded atmosphere.

We preferred the vibe of the main hotel and enjoyed meeting tourists from all over.

Great value. Would definitely go back!!

Room Tip: Corner rooms in the buildings have larger balconies. We loved building 39 for convenience to restaur...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014

We have been all over Cuba at many resorts that were 4 star. I heard from friends that I worked with that this was the place to go in Cuba. Boy were they wrong, I found out they have never been anywhere else in Cuba to compare too.
We arrived Jan 16th at 11:00pm, check-in was quick, our room key did not work, walked back to the lobby and had another key made, this didn't work either, Back to the lobby, we send technician, he came played with the door didn't work for him either. After 45 minutes he got us in , now 1:15am, apparently the door handle is in reverse, lift to open.
Next we turn the TV on were tired and want some food from room service. No TV working, order food. Now 2:00am want to wash face and go to bed, nope, sink fills to top and doesn't run away. How do you like this place now after travelling since noon the day before. Air conditioning was mariginal and now it started raining outside.

Day 2- well get everything fixed, do not complain as we have been to Cuba 11 times before coming here. Hop in the shower to clean up after lunch and find the water pressure isn't enough to shower with, thank goodness it has a handheld shower head to rinse off with.Better to go outside as it is raining again. In between rain bouts we walk around and see what this place has to offer. Walked to the small rocky beach, past the smelly lagoon, past the pool which is peeling and a mess.
Food is good no complaints, little repiticious daily
Bar service is slow, they look down and pretend they are busy doing something. Many days wait 5 -10 minutes for a drink. No fresh fruit drinks made with a blender. We tipped 1 cuc every second drink throughout our stay. A few waiters were with it and they did serve better.

Day 3 and 4 rained all day- entertainment staff had kids games arranged -ring toss, darts with the board sitting on a chair. I asked if there would be prizes for the kids game, most resorts give the winner a small bottle of Rum- Not our resort I was told, 1 person played.

There was too much not the best to rate higher than a 6 to a 7 out of ten.
Breakfest, tang orange juice, bacon like I have never seen before.

They have 2 hammocks on the rock wall on the beach, too high from the water and big rocks underneath, waves hitting at the same time the drunks were trying to get on these. Get rid of these DANGERS, why put a tourist at risk. If you weren't drunk you would not try this.

Thursday to Thursday - 5 hours of sunshine

We go to Cuba because of the sun, beaches and the people.
We struck out on the sun and the beach, still enjoyed the people, but this is the 1st time we saw regular police and military regularily on the hotel property. Never saw this on any of the other Cuban resorts.

So where do I Give Cuba resorts 5 stars, Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo.
Would I return to this resort again ,No they need work everywhere

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014

January 2014 saw my 5th visit to the Paradisus Rio De Oro. My first visit in 2009 I gave 5 * as the Hotel and Surroundings warranted the rating.
2012 there was a noticeable decline in the Hotel and some of the hygiene standards. The Staff are absolutely amazing and they have become like family so I returned again this year.

A noticeable decline this year was the Pool and surrounding areas. The Pool is in desperate need of some TLC. The floor and sides are very green in places with the Algae laying dormant. The Pool area is not cleaned, the same debris hanging around for more than 2 days.

Another noticeable difference were the Menus and presentation in all the Al La Carte Restaurants, gone are the beautifully presented Dishes. Most dishes are now blasted through Rationale Convectors so the food is very hot but very dry.

One of the Lifeguards on the Beach thought it more important to Preen himself rather than do the Job he is employed to do. Our party and several other Guests were having to go to the aid of fellow Guests who had taken a tumble over the rocks and fighting the current to get back to the Beach.

The Hotel grounds are still kept beautiful by the amazing team of Gardeners who never tire of greeting you and presenting you with a lovely flower and a nice smile.

The Staff are still excellent across the whole complex and cannot do enough for you. They are a Credit to the Melia Group.

You will not find International Brands now in the Lobby Bar just the local brands. Massive decline here as everything was top Notch. If you want the best you now have to pay for it.

I had kept an eye on Trip Advisor before I left and thought that the new Manager Lorenzo had a real passion for the Hotel and was looking forward to the raised standards under his Management, he always makes a comment of "you should have brought it to my attention whilst in Resort". I wrote to Lorenzo personally on the 14th January 2014 with a few issues that we were having, handing this in at 1920 that day at the front desk. 5 Days later I had not had any response from him I was told that he had not received the letter nor would he be back in the Hotel until the 20th January. So much for caring what his Guests thought.
Fortunately one of the Ladies on Customer Service finally spoke to me and tried to resolve the issues on the 19/01/14. I have still not had any word from the MD thought.

The Hotel is lovely and the Staff are the best there are BUT a lot of hard work by the Management will be needed to bring this amazing Hotel back to the high standards it held in 2009. I personally feel that all the money has been spent on the Royal Service and the main hub of the Hotel has been put on the back burner.

I will return again and hopefully things will start to improve as the new General Manager has only had control for 18 months.

A lovely Hotel in an amazing Country with outstanding Staff.

Room Tip: Block 39 and 40 are the best.

Yes, it is certainly a high end all-inclusive in Cuba. However, during our tour through Cuba in Dec/Jan 13/14 we had seen so many hotels with much friendlier staff, nicer pools, better food (even when the choice here was tremendous), and a lot more vibe. This is a country that loves dance and music, but the Rio de ORO just doesn't show. It feels kind of boring.

Just a couple of things....
The main beach is rather small and too crowded.
Another beach, which is clearly marked as part of the resort in the internet map, is now only reserved for special guests ('royal service').
The wind brought distinct stink from the lagoon(?), which smells like foul eggs. Ok. That is a natural phenomenon, but still wasn't nice (and the receptionist could not even explain what that is).
The reception was anyway hopelessly understaffed, we waited endlessly to check in. They at least could have send us to the 'food court' in the meantime. Seems they assumed that we'd find that out ourselves.
The tour guides have to stay outside. Very arrogant behaviour of the staff to make that clear.
The medical service is not available on sundays... and other people cannot detect something to disinfect a wound.
Restaurants (a la carte) have to have a reservation until 15 hrs, no matter if they are full or not. Just: no-one tells you in advance.
A Mojito is almost alcohol free before 18 hrs (which is probably a plus for most).

All in all - we will definitely not go for this exclusive location next time.

Room Tip: Insist on Ocean view and avoid the ones that are close to the lobby area.

Dear ReisendeJutta,
Thank you very much for posting your review in TripAdvisor.
We have informed our Departments about your opinion and looked into it with them. The doctor is not onsite on Sundays, but we have the International Clinic 5 minutes from the hotel that is open 24 hours in case guests need medical attention. Please, also notice that we have a program of entertainment all day long, also all inclusive and payable tours with the entertainers, as well as night shows. Despite these items, we would truly like to have the opportunity of having you back and help make your stay all enjoyable.
With sincere regards,
Lorenzo Rubio

Arrived at the hotel for our second Cuban Holiday (First was our Honeymoon in Cayo Coco), to find a hotel in need of some TLC. Whilst we have nothing to complain about, the Hotel itself is starting to look a bit down at heel; the room smelt slightly of damp (although this faded thru our two week stay) but was a good size & comfortable, the pool definitely needs some attention.
Enough of the down side. The food was excellent, the company even better and the service was fantastic. Yudy serving in the lobby bar & Alien with the cigar trolley really excelled and were always ready to serve even before asked!
