“Paradisus indeed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

This is atop notch hotel and as good as you will find in Cuba. The reason that it is so good is the Spanish ownership and management, they have managed to motivate the staff who are friendly and enthusiastic. The hotel manages to shun the Cuban lack of urgency, mañana syndrome, that manifests its self over the island. Met some great people there, the bulk are Canadian and very nice, but there are some very loud ones, too much rum I think and also some seriously obese ones also. But don't let that'll you off the food is excellent always a huge choice, I don't think I have ever eaten so much seafood.

I totally recommend this as a great destination, but you must must must also do Havana its about a. 2 hour flight and you need a few night there.

Thought I posted, but late is better than never. Visited April 2012.

Luxury without pretentiousness. Everything about the place was top notch even by North American Standards a true 5 star experience.

Stayed at this resort from May 1- May 8. We traveled with a large party for a wedding and everyone absolutely loved their time here. We stayed in the Royal Service, and the service/food/ocean views were breathtaking. Junior suite rooms are extremely nice, and those that complain that they are outdated need to understand that this is the Cuban lifestyle. Thank you so much to Manuel and Carlos. You two made our trip the best.

Room Tip: If you can afford to upgrade to Royal Service, do it!

After almost 15 yrs, as we were getting worried about our favoured resorts quality declined, we were so happy to witnessed a great come back while visiting Last week in April. The quality of food is back to what it always was "best in Cuba"... Service is even better than ever...Chef Julio and the Japanese Chef Mini are extraordinary cooks as well as most courteous individuals ...I should not forget to mentioned Julio's Merengue and Mini's Salsa skills...Speaking of dancing The Entertainment has also been improved, saturday night addition to Taina indians was a great idea, added to already fantastic program of Great Arias from various Operas following tradition Cuban Music and Great Jazz Rio with fabulous clarinet player. Congratulations to General Manager Lorenzo for turning things around, only one problem left is the WIFI which is not acceptable at all at a paradise like place Rio De Oro. Another minor issues is the Tennis Courts needs little more attention.(The place already have a great Tennis Pro.)

We will gladly go back over and over again many years to come.

PS: Make sure to have a day in the one of the best Spa in Caribbean!!

Room Tip: Definetely Royal Service

we stayed here in January 2013 for two weeks. tired on arrival but hospitable greeting with glass of bubly and cool towel. We were near the main restaurant so short walk but the beach was about 200 metres away.however the walk was worthwhile as the swimming was excellent but very poor snorkelling as very little mostly dead coral. The bars was were excellent with a wide variety of drinks, meals or snacks including champagne(probably fizzy white wine)
The buffet restaurant was excellent with high quality food of extensive variety so much so that ed did not venture inti the many a la carte dining areas which we gather were of equally high standard. The rooms were well appointed & expertly looked after by very attentive staff. The grounds were lovely. We even had a bird watching guide tour which was excellent.
Our 2 day trip by plane to Havana was a highlight & well worth the expense with expert guide including a stay at the National hotel & a night time trip to the Tropicana club-highly recommended The evening entertainment was mainly of high qaulity including some very talented acts. All in all a fabulous holiday in lovely surroundings with lovely staff helped by the frequent small tipping which was greatly appreciated. No children an d a variety of clientel, mainly Brits & Canadians made it very peaceful & most enjoyable. We have booked to go again to Cuba next year on the strenght of this wonderful experience

Room Tip: The standard rooms are well spaced out in small 1 or2 storey blocks. All much the same. You chose be...

Lovely hotel and beautiful location. All the staff from gardeners through to the Manager are always genuinely helpful and always aim to please. Food was of good quality and plenty of choice. The a la carte restaurants are excellent with beautiful decor. We had a junior suite which had recently been refurbished but some of the junior suites did seem a bit tired and in need of updating but what the heck. The hotel and grounds are immaculately clean and the atmosphere in general is peacefull and tranquil - exactly what I was looking for. The entertainment was not always to my taste but that is true of any hotel and they always tried hard. The synchronised swiiming/ water ballet was actually very good and something a bit different - the so called 70s band was tragic and murdered every song they performed! Lovely hotel and would recommend it to anyone

Room Tip: Corner suires are larger and upstairs is better

Been to Cuba before, so knew what to expect food wise, and once again, weren't disappointed. The coffee and bread are the best we've had in the Caribbean. The staff in this resort are second to none. The main buffet is excellent for all meals, there is nothing else you could possibly want. Some people's comments on here are unbelievable. Complaining about the juice -get a grip. The speciality restaurants are good, and the beach and pool restaurants are excellent, with good lunch menus.

Yes the rooms could do with refurbishment, but they are nowhere near the worst we have ever stayed in, and they are kept exceptionally clean, which is more important. We did upgrade to Royal
Service for the last 4 days, which was worth it, even though there was a mix up and we had to wait 3 hours for the transfer, and didn't get the butler service. However, we did get recompense for this when we brought it to the attention to the Manager over there. Lovely lady who runs a tight ship, and I am so sorry I can't remember her name.

As for the complaints about the lack of music round the pool, this is clearly mentioned in the hotel description, and is one of the reasons why we booked. Can't stand the all day boom boomboom round the pools of some hotels. As for the age range, we thought it was a pretty good mix. Certainly not all over 60. Basic tip - if you don't read all the details, you can't really complain. We would go back tomorrow, but if you are in the main hotel, ask for a room in a block further down, away from the stage, if you like the odd early night.
