“Authentic friendly experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2014 via mobile

We spent 5 days at this wonderful family's home, 2 years ago. They were not on trip advisor at the time. Yaima and Jesus went out of their way to make us comfortable, informed and welcomed. We had enormous fresh breakfasts every day and also many tasty dinners. We respected that they utilized whatever foods were available on any particular day. The place was clean and the a/c worked well. It was close to the town square and central to everything. The bed was a little small for NA standards but we knew this was not NA but Cuba. We have been in Cuba a number of times and we would highly recommend the World Heritage town of Trinidad and this particular place to stay while there. If you are looking for a friendly authentic Cuban experience this is the place for you.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2014

We stayed for 3 nights in February 2014. We are both in our later sixties and had no trouble with the stairs, which are narrow, because on both arrival and departure the hostess very kindly carried all our bags up and down for us.

Rooms were spacious and comfortable, although I found the beds, like most of those we encountered in Cuba were not terribly comfortable, just like most hotels around the world.

The food was plentiful, tasty, fresh and at less than £7 for an evening meal a bargain. Food would not be one of the reasons for going to Cuba and the menus are all pretty standard, but Casona La 254 tried to vary flavours and presented some beautiful meals. Breakfast was always too much, as were all the meals, but filled with fresh ripe fruit, juices, eggs to choice, fresh bread and cakes we were well prepared for our busy days. All meals were taken on the terrace and at night you got a real flavour of the place by people-watching from there before exploring the night life, music, bars and restaurants.

Casona La 254 is only a short walk from the main square and Trinidad is a brilliant city, intimate, historic and with a great street market.

The hostess, Yaimay Jesus, spoke more than adequate English and was present all the time during our stay, the cook was excellent and the waitress/chamber maid changed our beds after two nights and supplied fresh towels. Shower was not great but then that was a general issue throughout Cuba.

I would stay there again and happily recommend it to anyone who has travelled a little in developing countries and is used to not five star services. The gripes in the first review may have been fair for a five star hotel, I just think you need to take a sense of reality with you on some holidays.

When we left our hostess accompanied us to the square to ensure that we had no trouble meeting our taxi to the Bay of Pigs.

Room Tip: Ask for the room below the terrace, no window but good AC and quiet.

We stayed here for two nights. The owners were very welcoming and on hand to help or answer questions anytime. We didn't notice any sort of noise disturbance like the review below. We were greeted with fresh guava fruit juice (which was lovely) and offered dinner (which we accepted on the second night). We were given breakfast which was plentiful. There was a range of fruit, bread, homemade cake (which was really nice), fresh fruit juice, coffee, eggs, meat, cheese - pretty much anything you could want in a breakfast. The dinner was 3 courses and we ate on the balcony upstairs which was lovely at night (in fact, I think all the meals are served up here). We had croquettes for starter, fish, rice and salad for main, which was tasty and well cooked, and an apricot pudding. I think it was about ten pounds each which wasn't much for the amount of food we were given.
The room was clean and comfortable, with it's own bathroom. The decor was homely - it's not all white walls etc if that's what you're looking for.
The owners were really helpful when we checked out and were on hand to help us sort out our transportation and bags.
Overall, a really nice place to stay for a few days.

This was not our first or second choice and the travel agent in the UK said the local agent had recommended it as somewhere they use on a regular basis. I was a bit worried that it had not been reviewed before but given there was no other choice we just went for it and we thought it might be more interesting to stay in a casa for at least part of our trip.

I feel a bit mean writing this review as the people who own this casa have obviously taken a huge step to open their house to foreign guests and were nice enough people to deal with. The problem is that the service offered is just not up to scratch and I hope that they take the following as constructive criticism.

They welcomed us with a nice fruit cocktail which was lovely and our bags were taken to our room. So no complaints about the welcome at all.

Dinner was offered and we accepted for our first night and it was good value. The food was fine but not spectacular so we decided to try elsewhere for our other evening meals.

Breakfast was OK with the exception of one thing (see below). We ate on quite a nice balcony at the front of the house.

The room was spotlessly clean and had AC and a small fridge.

We asked for beach towels one day and these were provided which was really helpful.

The stairs leading up to the guest rooms have no handrail and are so narrow that it's really difficult to manoeuvre bags and you have to hug the wall to feel safe. Not at all great for people with young children or if you have even a slight mobility problem.

The room we stayed in was at the back of the house. There is only a very sheer net curtain which means that light comes in at all times so not great if you like a dark room to sleep in. Also not great for changing as you feel that privacy could be an issue. There is also a glass pane above the door where the light shines in from the corridor. Perhaps a thicker curtain might be a good idea. We had a room with one double and one single. The double wasn't really big enough for two to sleep comfortably and I slept in the single bed. I didn't think either were particularly comfortable. The standard of fixtures and fittings was basic (i.e. windows didn't close particularly well as they looked hand made and had small bolts holding them closed. The beside lamp was plugged into a socket right next to the bed so that you could easily touch it when asleep.

The shower was not great as the water pressure was quite poor. You also had a big step up into the toilet/shower room which was a bit odd and easy to trip over or off. The shower also splashed on to the rest of the bathroom floor no matter how you positioned the nozzle which meant that the bath mat was soaking wet. There was no shower mat which was also an issue as it got quite slippy. There were only two small bath towels which were not changed during our stay (3 nights). The room was also not cleaned or made up. We weren't so bothered about this but it would have been nice to have been given clean towels each day or at least offered them. Yes, we could have asked for towels but we assumed this would be done automatically.

The room was really noisy at night as the family listened to a TV directly below our room (which we thought was probably above their lounge/kitchen area). If you're a light sleeper or want an early night then this is not great. There was also a TV in the hall area which was on most of the evening.

The décor in the room was pretty basic. Just painted walls with a TV on a bracket which is totally unnecessary. Perhaps some Cuban art on the walls would brighten the place up. Just something to make it feel a bit more welcoming.

Perhaps also some useful tourist literature would help either in the communal balcony area or in the rooms. There was only one lady who could speak good English and we only really saw her at the beginning and at the end of our stay. It might have been useful if she could have given us some more information about the local area or even about her own history which might have been interesting as we were staying in her house. I think if you're doing this sort of thing and doing it well, you have to be really interested in tourism and in telling people about your area and yourself and also asking something about them. It was all just a bit basic

Breakfast. We were given some marmalade in a small plastic tub (individual size). This was slightly opened so I decided not to use it as I didn't know how long it had been open. It reappeared the next day which I thought was very poor.

I really hope that the owners take this in the spirit it is given - as constructive criticism. All the CONS above are things that could be improved upon but as it stands I would not recommend this as good/comfortable accommodation in Trinidad.
