“Tourist sheep dip with little to offer”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

We went there to see some authentic Cuban people at home in the countryside and to see this well know valley. First of all you cannot see the valley except in a 4x4 as the roads are no more than tracks. I was also interested in photographing the ruins of the sugar industry but there are apparently none here - strange as there were 51 sugar mills and a million slaves working here in the 19th century. All you can see is a tower with a view surrounded by stalls selling tourist nick-nacks and an indifferent cafe. It used to be possible to see the valley on an ancient steam train but as a bridge has collapsed and not been repaired it no longer runs.

“Sugar cane country”

A very pleasant afternoon in beautiful countryside and a glimpse into history. Ask your casa owner to arrange a taxi.

“To be honest, not that chuffed ...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

A day trip from Trinidad which we wouldn't particularly recommend, because:

The train (locomotive diesel, not steam) left from Trinidad two hours late because it had to take people to vote in local elections before undertaking our excursion (allegedly);

We were travelling independently, and almost every seat in the two carriages was occupied by members of a large group so that we ended up standing or sitting on the floor;

The noise level was incredible, due to music being broadcast from loudspeakers in the front carriage at full volume, the non-stop banging and clanking of the carriages, and everyone shouting at everyone else to make themselves heard;

The sugar plantation wasn't very interesting and was more or less taken over by souvenir sellers;

The Casa Guachinango was even less interesting and charged us nearly 27 CUCs for three cups of coffee and two inedible ham sandwiches - these prices were daylight robbery by Cuban standards. (We fed the sandwiches to local dogs, who were appreciative);

We did meet some nice people on the train and that was about it. We had some great days out in Cuba but, believe it or not, this wasn't one of them.

“very interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

Thanks to our guide Ada we learned a lot about the valley and its history and on the production of sugar and rum. Ada also took us to a more remote sugar mill. A good way to spend half a day near Trinidad.

“Was An Interesting Stop”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

This area is actually about 12 km from Trinidad and has a tower that is also listed as a "thing to do" on TA. It is entitled "Manaca-Iznaga Tower".

We stopped here on the way to Trinidad with our tour group and it gave us an interesting lesson on Cuban history, particularly much about the sugarcane plantations in the area.

There is an open air market nearby the tower and they sell some beautiful items including linens.
