“Better than expected”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2011

In February we went to Brisas Trinidad del Mar. We weren't expecting a lot. We'd read Trip Advisor reviews which ranged from good to bad.

One thing I would like to ask reviewers is, please complete your personal Trip Advisor profile. Do it honestly and completely. I'm in my 60s and have traveled a lot in the Caribbean, Central America and Europe so I have certain expectations. I'm sure I will have a different reaction to a hotel review by a 20 something first time traveller than I will from someone in my own age group. Likewise, a young person doesn't necessarily want to hear my opinion of a destination, they'd prefer and relate better to a review by their peers. Enough about that - on to the review.

The hotel was very good. The staff was friendly and the food was generally quite acceptable. It should be noted that we don't go to the Caribbean for the food - especially to Cuba. We go for the sun and the relaxation. We got lots of both at Brisas. One item of note, generally in the "food" category is that the barteners for the most part don't have a clue. Even the basics were often, not always, mediocre at best.

The big plus for us was the excellent beach. Great swimming. We spent most of every day on the beach - in fact, we didn't go into any of the pools once. The beach was clean, the water was warm. It was never over crowded although there were always lots of people around.

Two negatives and I've heard at least one (the first) before by reviewers. The water in the rooms. While we personally didn't have a water pressure issue, our travelling companions did. They were on the upper floor, we were on the middle (despite having asked on our reservation for an upper floor). Not only did they have a pressure issue, they also had difficulty finding a time to have a hot, or even warm, shower. The bathtubs in both our rooms were stained and just plain dirty looking. The overall cleanliness left something to be desired. We took some Lysol with us and did a little cleaning/disinfecting when we arrived. It wasn't a big deal but it is worth of comment. The other negative, and this one will definitely show my age, the overly loud music from the stage performance every night. Virtually all the rooms at the hotel are bombarded by this noise from about 8:00 until about 11:00 every night. Those that want to hear it are sitting in the audience, at most a few dozen feet away. Those of us that don't want to hear it can't escape, even in our rooms at the far end of the complex. Figure it out people. Everybody doesn't want to hear the Show, every night.

Generally however, the vacation was wonderful and relaxing. The highlight to us was the Trinidad tour. Trinidad is an interesting city and rich in culture and architecture. We found a couple of "treasures" which we bought, but generally just the atmosphere was worth the experience. While assembling for the return to the hotel, we all met in a Cuban Jazz Club. It was a wonderful experience. It's a Social Club (like the legendary Buena Vista Social Club) for the locals with all day jazz and a variety of performers. Everyone is encouraged to dance. Nothing formal, just fun.

There is a small market that assembles outside the buffet restaurant every evening with artists and various crafts people. We met one artist, Esubio. We learned that he is a professor at the Art College in Trinidad. As my wife is also an artist, she was enthuzed and Esubio invited us to visit him in Trinidad the next day and he would take us on a tour of the College. We went and it was wonderful. It is absolutely amazing what the teachers and the students do with almost no materials. We wish we could send a boat load of paint, brushes, canvases etc to them. Sadly we can't. They would just be confiscated by Customs before ever reaching the School.

Our Sunwing rep, his name is Levy (most everyone called him Larry) was probably the best Rep we've ever had on vacation. Whenever we needed him, he was there. If we asked a question, he either had or immediately got the answer. If we had a problem, he got it fixed. If more Reps were like Levy, more vacationers would have better vacations.

We'll go back. We know our expectations. They aren't too high but for the price, it's a good vacation.

Room Tip: Don't go with high expectations or attitude.

I booked my vacation before I bothered to look at any reviews. After reading the reviews, I was very hesitant. The reviews did help, because I had very low expectations of the hotel.

I met many nice people there and had a chance to see their rooms, most of my friends had issues with plumbing, AC leaking or balcony leaking (due to rain). My room however was the best, no bed bugs (as I had read there being), no plumbing issues (except for one day which was fixed) , no AC issues. We did have an all inclusive package our safe was included and we used a code (not a key), we were allowed to use the fridge but there was no need.

The food was horrible, I had anticipated that. But I was not expecting it to be that bad. There was french toast from breakfast presented at lunch with sprinkles, it wasn't the best buffet. There is the ability to reserve dinner upstairs, try to do that if you can as much as possible!

The drinks weren't that strong, but after tipping the bartender; I managed to get some good drinks.

The entertainment wasn't bad at all, people say it is the same thing over and over, but the dancers were amazing, rain or shine they danced and preformed. Our first week there we met DOUGLAS, he was a very intelligent and exuberant part of the animacion team. He spoke 4 languages (Spanish, English, French and a little Italian). It was a great experience meeting him. I hope to hear that he is back working at Brisas very soon. I hope the next group of people appreciate the hard work the put into their nightly performances as much as the group of people I was with did.

The other staff were very good in general, our cleaning lady was amazing. She came to our room at 11 am like clock work, and by the time I came back to my room there was a swan.

Room Tip: Pack extra clothing, toiletries.

We stayed a couple of nights in this horrible hotel. The staff apperently doesn't try to earn tips and seem to just hate guests and their work. Best clients of the hotel seems to be the staff. They were using best beds at beach, and were drinking during work - some seemed drunk to us!

The food is terrible. Leftovers from breakfast were served again at lunch, in a strange way. For example the french toast was served again at lunch with cucumber and sprinkles, or pancakes were served again with mayonaise, ketchup and mustard. In our opinion disgusting and direspectful to clients. We ate a lot of fruit, eggs and pasta when we were here.

The swimmingpool was closed, because someone would be bussy cleaning it. But no one did a thing. I attempted to clean it myself, but that didn't work out:) To be short; the big swimming pool was closed for days and we weren' t able to use it. However we didn't see any cleaning activies. Real pitty, cause the pool looks great. The beach looks nice too, but crowded and best beds (in shadow) were already taken by staff.

This hotel has " Don't come here" written all over it. We felt sorry we were stuck at this plays for a few days. We rather would have stayed just one night in Iberostar Grand Hotel Trinidad; a beautiful building from the outside, in middle of Trinidad. You can visit Trinidad in a day, it ain't that big. And for the beach (and swimmingpool!) we prefer Varadero.

The worst thing of all was that the food was full in flies and it was impossible for us to eat almost anything. although it is an all included hotel ,they refused do give us a drink with havana club and instead they gave us a terrible unkown rum. the rooms were ok but again not good enough.

We paid less, because we pre booked with a local travel agent and because my cousin is Cuban - but even with the regular prices for Canadians and Europeans, it is a very good deal. The Beach and Pool are exceptional. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but some of the plumbing was funky. They have an excellent child care center with very attentive young women. The food was not that great in the regular dining room and had a "cattle call" kind of feel - you could only book the special dining room for one time/visit. The grounds are beautiful and don't miss going into Trinidad. Ask where the Palenque club is - and go there for the dancing and music and cultural show. But, don't pay more for beer than the locals! TIP ALL THE HOTEL STAFF WELL - They make very little money otherwise.

One of the best vacation ever!
The staff is the best and the quality of their service is outstanding! Please tip if you can, we've been to 4 and 5 stars hotels, but haven't seen this much effort by servers, maids, etc.
The beach is quite long, so if you like walking/running- it is for you.
There is a nice sand everywhere. 200-300 m off-shore- lots of fish, rays, etc. Bring your own mask and fins.
Tours: horse-backriding (30$/person)- a must. It is 4 hrs trip to the mountains, where you can swim in a fresh water! Amazing experience! If you're going now, there are mangos everywhere, make sure to try one!
"walking in the park" (50$, 8:30-4:00), so-so. Started on a coffee plantation where you supposed to get "included" coffee, but of course we had to pay. However, it was worth it. Hand processed and made coffee! Maybe we had a lazy guide, but was not impressed by the tour itself, though liked walking in the mountains.
Trinidad- must see. We hired a private guide (he didn't ask for a specific sum of money, but we paid 40$ + beer+ lobster lunch). Costed ~ 160-180$ for 4 people, much less expensive than in the hotel and you're on your own time. Lobsters range from 10-15$. However, they are huge and come with lots of rice, veggies and fruits. So you can actually share one "lunch" with 1 other person.
Scoobadiving- was good, did 2 dives in one day (don't do it!). Just do 1 per day. 2nd dive is shallow and very close to the shore.

Oh, almost forgot,..... the beach area is shared with locals, so you'll see quite a number of cubans walking around. There are 2 types- one- rich people, who come from havana for 3-4 days, stay at the same hotel (or somewhere else), quite loud and a bit messy but overal- harmless. The second type- "full-timeres". A few ladies with their kids stay on the beach all the time, and approach newly arrived asking for clothes, shampooes, etc. Don't want to say anything bad about them (maybe it is their style of life, but they'll be pushing their kids to play with yours (if you have) or ask you for something (imagine 4-7 yo asking you.....). Anyway, if you have some extra clothes, creams etc- they'll be happy to take it. However, these are "full-timers" there, so they probably have plenty. But if you walk on the beach ( any side), you'll notice a few families fishing, some of them are really poore, but will never ask for anything, so if you have some extra staff (or can bring some toys) and don't mind walking- give it to them.

We were torn between staying at a Casa in Trinidad or getting in some beach time for our Cuban holiday and decided to go with beach time at Playa Ancon. We were able to book a 3 day stay this resort through Sunwing (Canada) and aside from some extra paperwork, it was totally convenient.

Having been at a couple of all-inclusives in the Dominican Republic (DR), we can say that this is a cozy resort. Everything is within a short walking distance. The pool area seems contiguous but is actually two pools and seems to be at 3m in depth. Mostly, there were children playing in the pool. On one of the days, the pool was closed due to chlorine imbalance.

The jewel of this resort is the beautiful beach. The competition that you find at other resorts to secure a chair is not as bad but if you want shade, you need to go in the morning. We found the ocean wonderful. Beach walking was great…. The beach is public so beware the locals who pawn their kid to play with yours… or the many folk selling fruit or cigars and definitely avoid the man selling trays of pizza.

Food at this resort was pretty good. We only ate at the buffet restaurant and found their main meats well prepared (roast pork, bbq pork). It’s not overly plentiful but we found it adequate and in some cases, better flavour than food found in the DR. There is a station of custom spaghetti (other side of bar) that we noticed on our last day… not well publicized but you’ll see the chef hat in the corner. Entertainment is short and practically non-existent (maybe it was the time of year that we were there!) – started at 9:30 and ended at 10:15pm. We aren't drinkers so we can't really comment on drinks (but no bahama mamas!)

The resort was a moderate price and we feel that this was good value for what you get. If you want access to a beautiful and somewhat quiet beach and convenience of having meals then this is a good choice. Our rooms were fine. There is some wear but stucco walls are hard to clean. Our room faced the beach with a safe where you set your own code and the bathroom was fine. I believe they spray rooms regularly because my husband was booted out so they could do this.

Heading into Trinidad was not a problem – front desk will call you a taxi. We made two trips into town….one day to walk around and another day to check out Casa de la Musica. Worth the visit.

Room Tip: Bring your own drink cups.
