“Great Hotel, Amazing Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

I really cant say anything negative about this resort. I have been twice and I will hopefully be returning late spring. The buffet always had plenty of choices, fresh fruits and vegetables. A variety of meats and a fabulous pasta bar. Service was always bang on and lots of smiling faces from the porters to the Reservations desk staff. The a la carte restaurants were superb. Good wine with every meal. The snack bar at the beach made one of the best ham and cheese sandwiches with french fries...be sure to order it all dressed. Plenty of good cold Cristal beer on tap. Bloody Mary's and Mojitos to die for. Jesus at the Cafe Bar makes a mean Spanish coffee served in fancy drink glasses....just cant beat Cuban coffee! One of the best unspoiled beaches I have ever seen....it goes on forever if you like walking or running. Not too many waves so perfect for just wading. The hotel offers catamaran trips and snorkling...we did this many times...the catamaran captains are qualified sailors. I highly recommend a trip out just to see the beautiful view inland...stunning!! There is also deep sea diving available right at Ancon Hotel. The rooms in the Superior building are perfect. Cleaned meticulously daily. The views on the ocean side are breathtaking, on the bay side you can see beautiful Casilda and Trinidad sparkling at night, There were a few beautiful horses roaming the grounds during one of my stays. This is a very safe hotel with a strong security presence, although not overwhelming. Never once did I feel unsafe day or night at this resort. The entertainment was truly above and beyond for a three star hotel. You could also see the troups practicing during the day. True talent! I can not wait to get back to the beach and the Beautiful City of Trinidad. Awesome value for your money....I dare you to be disappointed!!

Room Tip: stayed in room 8214....spectacular view

For a 3 stars hotel it is very good. When I travel I don't expect a 5 stars resort when I pay for a 3 stars. The hotel is right on the beach and WOW what a beautiful beach; white powder sand and a very long one (I nerver saw the end of it on the left. There is beatiful snorkeling on the right pass the hotel Trinidad, close to the rocks. For scuba diving it's great and the diving center is very friendly and just right on the beach at the hotel. Rooms are very comfortable; I had a room in superior category an a view on the ocean. You have the mountain in the back scene and is worth a trip to Collantes. The best of all is you are close to the city of Trinidad taht is classified by UNESCO. The town is great for music, it's all over, club, la escalera, salsa everywhere. I never had so much fun on a trip. The staff at the hotel is friendly, great. The only point taht is so so is the food. Don't expect great meals but it is sufficient and for the price I paid I could easyly go in a family or in a restaurant in Trinidad. I will certainly go back. Diving was very good.

Room Tip: The rooms in category superior are excellent.

The hotel staff were skimming money from the hotel bank by no issuing receipts and taking 3 or 4 CUC for themselves saying the the excange rate was high. All lies. I saw employees steal the 60 CUC money for room upgrades for themselves. One of the lifegaurds was able to exchange CAD currency to CUC without a passport for the transaction at the hotel bank. This is majorly illegal. The room was not made and dirty right upon check in. The beach was very good. The food was pretty good. The hard booze was watered down. The coffee bar kicked and so did the pool bar. I also liked the hotel nightly show. Trinidad was very amazing but very annoying because there are alot of beggars there that are not poor at all. Tell them to get lost. They will.

Room Tip: Do not say here at all.

Soviet era garish concrete monstrosity. The utilitarian concrete corridors are peferctly designed as wind tunnels for even the slightest ocean breeze, the uneven rises on the stairs will catch out anyone having too many cuba libra's or mojitos, the all inclusive buffet was so inedible (even by Cuban standards) that our group decided enmasse to eat in Trinidad on our 2nd day. The A la Carte restaurants were closed. If you have to eat there, try the pool side cafe. Only one choice - grilled ham and cheese sandwich and fries but at least it was cooked (the "all night" snack was toast!). The common areas are vast, noisy caverns. The bedroom was tiny, no hot water at any time during our 2 nights and the connecting door to the adjacent room was so thin and ill fitting we could hear and almost see everything. Service was terrible, the worst we experienced in Cuba, except for one very friendly lady in the restuarant. Overall the place is very run down. The only redeeming features were the beach, snorkeling and leaving! We went as part of a gadventure small group tour of Cuba. Either it was a brilliant masterstroke by gadventures to show us another aspect of Cuban life (if so they succeeded) or they were totally suckered. The rest of the tour was excellent and so I hope it was the former.

Room Tip: Choose a different hotel!

This was a great base for visiting Trinidad, which is a beautiful little town and in terms of facilities it was definitely the cleanest, friendliest and most reliable of the hotels I stayed in Cuba.

I’ll get the main bugbear out the way first, and it’s a personal thing. All inclusive. Not my thing. I had never stayed in one before and had the image of shovel fulls of below average quality food and drink. Wasn’t far wrong. The food wasn’t the best of quality, and the crowd control at breakfast was spectacularly bad. The drinks, while included, were reasonably poorly concocted too and in little plastic cups.

In saying that, however, the hotel is in a lovely location on a peninsula around 10 minutes’ drive from Trinidad (8CUC in a taxi, and they’re usually hanging around the front, if not then reception will get one for you within minutes). My room was in the south wing, on the ground floor, straight onto the beach, which was lovely. It was quiet and very clean, with fully working amenities (including my only fully functioning hot shower in my entire time in Cuba!). The staff here were also helpful and friendly.

There was a spectacularly bad fashion show / entertaintment night one evening that was too funny for words, it was most definitely NOT a tyipcal Cuban experience but it was worth it for the laugh!

I’d be torn on staying here again due to my disdain for the all-inclusive package (I didn’t choose to stay here on this trip) but given my experiences elsewhere, it was nice to have some comfort and quiet!

Room Tip: I was on the south wing, ground floor with a balcony onto the beach. It was quiet and peaceful with...

Good location on beach, but too far from town if you want to spend time in town. The hotel was average and the rooms ok. The hotel buffet for breakfast was average and dinner not much better. Too far to go to town for dinner so we were stuck with the buffet. The bars were the best part since it is all inclusive, and the snacks at the pool bar were good. We were let down after staying at the Meli Cohiba in Havana. We did enjoy the beach but the water had too much sea weed floating to make it special.

Room Tip: Staying in the rooms facing the beach on the ground floor of the wing south of the pool would be the...

I spent several days here recently after a cycle tour. Fantastic location, super beach and dive base. It's 3 star and thats what you get but good value. Staff friendly and the odd tip helps bring smiles and service. I just wish we could have got glasses for the drinks and a bit more hot water in the shower. If the hotel is full be on time for dinner because the resturant gets full. Visit Trinidad, lovely place with gorgeous Spanish colonial buildings, also tourist market is good. Felt very safe.
I dived 3 times with Leon and Igor, excellent people and look after you well under water too. Very good visability, great corals and not bad fish.

Based on price, service and position I give it 4 out of five because of the staff and the beach.

Room Tip: Look for a room on 5th floor or above on sea side for amazing view.
