We stayed at Hei Matau Lodge for 2 nights in January 2014 and had a fantastic stay- what a beautiful and comfortable home- those views!! Peter and Fiona are very very good hosts and will make your stay most relaxed... we arrived to some home made banana bread which set the standards very high.. but it just got better and better!! The best breakfasts we have ever had (tried to recreate them at home!) Great canapés and wine from the region too. Really really recommend Hei Matau Lodge for a relaxing and beautiful stay on Waiheke island. Thank you Peter and Fiona (London is not quite the same!) x

I wanted to surprise my husband with an amazing weekend away to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. Even before the booking was made Peter was brilliant, going out of his way to make the weekend prefect and prefect it was.
From the moment we arrived Peter and Fiona looked after everything, nothing was a problem and everything was a pleasure.
The lodge and the grounds we're truly magnificent. Our room was beautiful, made even more amazing at night by the magical turndown fairy.
Beautiful scenery, stunning walks, incredible food and amazing hosts all made our anniversary weekend truly special. We hope to return to Waiheke one day and when we do we wouldn't want to stay anywhere else.
Thank you Peter and Fiona for having us in your gorgeous home.

We rented the whole property for NY eve 2013.

The owners of the property could not have been better hosts. There was a fridge full of food, fruit bowl as well as home baking!
The property is of an extremely high standard and very well appointed. A superb library and dvd collection ensured that there was entertainment on the day it rained.
The Children's area and bunk room was great for our little ones (3 and 5).

The location is around 10 mins from the car ferry and close to well known vineyards such as mudbrick. Even the drive out to Man o War was only around 45 mins.

The only thing I would say if you have kids is that you need to ensure that they are well behaved as the house is very well appointed and needs to be treated as such. Therefore if your kids like to run riot, then this is not the place for you.

With regard to couples or a group of friends then this is the place for you.

We stumbled upon this lodge on line when we were planning a weekend in Auckland. Had no intention of going to Waiheke Island but when it was clear accommodation was scarce (rugby and Valentine's Day) we looked further afield. We are very glad we did.

Not long after booking I received a welcome email including some restaurant recommendations and an offer to book them for us. This was an offer too good to refuse coupled with the fact that the hosts will drive you and pick you up. Further, a couple of days before arrival was confirmation that we would be collected from the ferry and a simple SMS was all that was required to confirm arrival time.

A warm welcome in the common lounge area with the offer of coffee and tea cake before being shown up to the room.

The room itself is spacious and decked out in hues of greens and browns. Large corner windows gave us a view over the pool and bay which was just beautiful. There were a couple of comfortable chairs, TV and DVD player. All very comfortable and fitting with the theme. There is no air conditioning which I thought strange to begin with. Obviously opening the windows brings a lovely breeze through the room and in fact I understand that it does not get that hot on the island. There is underfloor heating throughout for the winter months.

Bathroom is spacious with two sinks and a shower (no bath) and a loo with a view! Very nice toiletries and other touches (such as items you may have left behind) as well as great big fluffy towels. Bit of a warning on the shower, you may find a small puddle outside as the water escapes.

Evenings are spent with your hosts (Peter and Fiona) and other guests for pre-dinner canapes and local wines either in the communal lounge or on the deck. Fiona prepares a range of changing little delicacies which were difficult not to fill up on before heading out to dinner each night.

It was then off to dinner and we took advantage both nights of the offer of being driven and collected.

We didnt really utilise the pool or beach or deck. That said, breakfast was served al fresco and what seemed at a time convenient to us - this was a real delight. Another food warning - breakfast servings are large, tasty and go straight to the hips!! The servings could be halved in size and you would still be completely satisfied! We sat in two different spots each day and were well attended to.

On returning the second night we asked for some cheese and biscuits and wine to finish the night. This was waiting for us (see photo) when we returned and finished off the night perfectly.

Also recommend the walk along the local walking track. Great scenery and not super difficult unless you really hate stairs.

If there was to be one item of feedback it would be having the ability to have a snack during the day and if it is available, understanding what is on offer. As we really did use the time to relax it was not clear if there was food available during the day and the costs. I know you can get more as we had the cheese platter. It really is a minor issue but one that I think would be nice to know.

Definitely can recommend this lodge - you cna't fault it.

During our two day stay the island produced various weather conditions and Hei Matau offered a peaceful haven from all these elements. The lodge has stunning uninterrupted sea views, plush surrounds, attentive and congenial hosts Fiona and Peter, excellent food and wine. A high end retreat, perfect for relaxing in a superb location.

My partner and I visited Waiheke for a weekend break and had a perfect experience with our stay at Hei Matau. Every aspect of the accommodation and hospitality was world class, with Peter and Fiona ensuring that we were well looked after (even before we arrived). The views from our room were stunning, offering the perfect amount of seclusion and privacy in idyllic green surroundings just meters from the beach. The communal areas are fantastic, offering equally stunning views across the gulf, and provide a good opportunity to enjoy the company of the hosts with a glass of local produce and some delicious home-made canapés! The breakfasts were another distinguishing feature, with a fine selection of fresh fruits, muesli and hot savoury offerings to enjoy (if you still have room!). Hei Matau is truly a special place with fantastic hosts, and i cannot recommend it highly enough.
