“Idyllic escape, personal service...it's all class”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

We stumbled upon this lodge on line when we were planning a weekend in Auckland. Had no intention of going to Waiheke Island but when it was clear accommodation was scarce (rugby and Valentine's Day) we looked further afield. We are very glad we did.

Not long after booking I received a welcome email including some restaurant recommendations and an offer to book them for us. This was an offer too good to refuse coupled with the fact that the hosts will drive you and pick you up. Further, a couple of days before arrival was confirmation that we would be collected from the ferry and a simple SMS was all that was required to confirm arrival time.

A warm welcome in the common lounge area with the offer of coffee and tea cake before being shown up to the room.

The room itself is spacious and decked out in hues of greens and browns. Large corner windows gave us a view over the pool and bay which was just beautiful. There were a couple of comfortable chairs, TV and DVD player. All very comfortable and fitting with the theme. There is no air conditioning which I thought strange to begin with. Obviously opening the windows brings a lovely breeze through the room and in fact I understand that it does not get that hot on the island. There is underfloor heating throughout for the winter months.

Bathroom is spacious with two sinks and a shower (no bath) and a loo with a view! Very nice toiletries and other touches (such as items you may have left behind) as well as great big fluffy towels. Bit of a warning on the shower, you may find a small puddle outside as the water escapes.

Evenings are spent with your hosts (Peter and Fiona) and other guests for pre-dinner canapes and local wines either in the communal lounge or on the deck. Fiona prepares a range of changing little delicacies which were difficult not to fill up on before heading out to dinner each night.

It was then off to dinner and we took advantage both nights of the offer of being driven and collected.

We didnt really utilise the pool or beach or deck. That said, breakfast was served al fresco and what seemed at a time convenient to us - this was a real delight. Another food warning - breakfast servings are large, tasty and go straight to the hips!! The servings could be halved in size and you would still be completely satisfied! We sat in two different spots each day and were well attended to.

On returning the second night we asked for some cheese and biscuits and wine to finish the night. This was waiting for us (see photo) when we returned and finished off the night perfectly.

Also recommend the walk along the local walking track. Great scenery and not super difficult unless you really hate stairs.

If there was to be one item of feedback it would be having the ability to have a snack during the day and if it is available, understanding what is on offer. As we really did use the time to relax it was not clear if there was food available during the day and the costs. I know you can get more as we had the cheese platter. It really is a minor issue but one that I think would be nice to know.

Definitely can recommend this lodge - you cna't fault it.

During our two day stay the island produced various weather conditions and Hei Matau offered a peaceful haven from all these elements. The lodge has stunning uninterrupted sea views, plush surrounds, attentive and congenial hosts Fiona and Peter, excellent food and wine. A high end retreat, perfect for relaxing in a superb location.

My partner and I visited Waiheke for a weekend break and had a perfect experience with our stay at Hei Matau. Every aspect of the accommodation and hospitality was world class, with Peter and Fiona ensuring that we were well looked after (even before we arrived). The views from our room were stunning, offering the perfect amount of seclusion and privacy in idyllic green surroundings just meters from the beach. The communal areas are fantastic, offering equally stunning views across the gulf, and provide a good opportunity to enjoy the company of the hosts with a glass of local produce and some delicious home-made canapés! The breakfasts were another distinguishing feature, with a fine selection of fresh fruits, muesli and hot savoury offerings to enjoy (if you still have room!). Hei Matau is truly a special place with fantastic hosts, and i cannot recommend it highly enough.

Me and Sean had our wedding in Hei Matau. It is absolutely beautiful over there. And owner Peter and Fiona are the kindest vendor ever. They even baked browie for us, and prepare the wedding gift for us. It is so amazing.
The Lodge itself is an awesome piece of art. You just can never have enough of it. It gives you WOW effect in anytime. And the price for this place is very resonable too.
We would definitely go back for holiday again. Wonderful experience over there!

My family spent one night at The Hei Matau Lodge. Peter and Fiona were wonderful hosts, we felt welcome and at ease immediately. The rooms and bathrooms are gorgeous and come with all the little extras that make one feel special. The ocean view is spectacular and the property is surrounded by lush greenery and even a beautiful horse grazing peacefully. The breakfast was to die for and our wonderful hosts had the table beautifully set up ready when we were. We so enjoyed our time at the Hei Matau and would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a luxuriously peaceful stay.

Room Tip: Room overlooking ocean on lower floor was gorgeous

Absolutely delightful place. quiet private ocean beach, swimming pool and hot tub, views of water, beautiful lawn, impeccable furnishings, not too ornate, but extremely tasteful. Sorry for the run-on sentences, but I could run on and on about Hei Matau. The lovely owners provided food for the trip and great suggestions of things to do. The island of Waiheke is a perfect launch pad to New Zealand with its wineries, restaurants and local/organic flavors. Couldn't recommend the place more. We stayed with our three kiddies in the main house and it was perfect.

The service and hospitality of Peter and Fiona was fantastic from our first point of contact to even after we left (a number of Fiona's recipes came our way). Hei Matau Lodge is a beautifully appointed property with expansive views of the Hauraki Gulf. We chose the romantic package as we were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary of which all aspects were faultless and in particular the gourmet picnic hamper which had an amazing selection of goodies and our individualised massages. The breakfasts were a great start to the day and the pre-dinner cocktail nibbles accompanied by Waiheke Island wines were devine. It was also a pleasure to meet the other guests of which all were from overseas. Why travel overseas when we have this in our own backyard.

Room Tip: Our room was fabulous and would imagine all rooms would be regardless of location
