“Curates Egg”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

Like the curates egg this resort is good in parts. We arrived on the public bus, No2 from the ferry and were put off ay the gate. There is a slight incline initially and then on turning the corner to follow the Reception signs the road rises steeply, very steeply, into the clouds. It is a pretty exhausting climb with baggage! Reception is in a temporary area due to redevelopment and difficult to find behind builders vans etc.
On finding it the receptionist was very pleasant and helpful. She directed us to our accommodation, in the furthest downhill unit from reception!!
The unit was reasonably clean but with pots of cobwebs both inside and around the sitting area outside, underneath the bed had not seen the light of day for a while! However the plus side was this unit was reasonably close to the bus stop. (Buses run on 'Island Time' governed very mush by ferry arrivals.)
Breakfast was delivered in the afternoon for the following day, two slices of bread wrapped in glad wrap, two yoghurts, two small pkts of cereal . individual jam s and butter, 1 of each per person and a small milk. Not going to ruin the diet!!!
Apart from sleeping did not use the facilities at all, being somewhat past the first flush of youth and the pool being at the top of the resort we tended to stay where we were!
Suggest the resort identifies steep gradients on web site to alert older travellers not in a vehicle!

Stayed here for 1 night. I had rung the day before and asked for an early check in time as we had a wedding on the island that day. When we arrived no one was at reception, we waited for around 10-20 mins until we spotted someone and whistled loudly for their attention. Not a good first impression! The staff member showed us to our room that was quite a way from the reception area, in fact right near the sewerage pits! There was a sign not far from our room saying something like, don't go past this point - effluent area. The room itself was comfortable and the amenities in the room were OK. However the shower drain stunk! If we had known this resort had no shop or was close to any shops we would not have booked here. It is like being in the middle of suburbia. Beware of many steps and steep drive. This booking was made last year and so wasn't a last minute reservation.

Stayed here for a weekend away.....
The resort is being refurbished currently which wasn't disruptive but be aware there are some alterations going on.

To break it down

The Room
We stayed in a 1 bed villa which was nice. A little worn around the edges in places but generally good. The bed wasn't too comfy. Great deck with a partial view of Palm Beach.

The Staff
The lady in reception was nice and friendly and very helpful at juggling the rooms so that we could stay in the same one for both nights, also allowed us an extra hour and a half on check out.

The Resort
We weren't really sure what to expect as the website doesn't give a great deal of information. The restaurant was not open whilst we were there (? due to refurbishments) and I did not see a bar. The room rate includes breakfast we went looking for the restaurant and were told that breakfast was delivered to our room - this was done very promptly. (2 slices of white bread with butter and jam, two yoghurts and two small boxes of cereal with milk). We spoke to some other guests during our stay who didn't realise the breakfast inclusion and therefore didn't get it.
The resort was generally a bit untidy - walked into reception (which was temporary due to refubishments) there was a hoodie slung over a chair a bottle of sunscreen on the floor and the adjoining room had empty beer bottles scattered over the tables - not terrible but doesn't give the best impression.
The pool area is great with fantastic views over Palm Beach. Be aware you have to pay extra for the spa pool.

Location
Palm Beach is a really nice little bay and its about a 10 minute walk down and 15 minute walk back up. There is a dairy and fish 'n chip shop but nothing else within walking distance. Easy bus ride - they go on the hour. If you want to be somewhere with a few more amenities close at hand this isn't for you.

Value for money
Not great

Overall
The resort is nice and will hopefully be great when the refurbishments are complete. Currently it isn't really offering many of the services that the limited website information says it does. We booked late and this was one of the only places with availability. I would try somewhere else next time.

We stayed for 1 night in a 2 bedroom apartment with fantastic views and a large balcony. Reception is up a very steep hill and had been moved as it was being refurbished as was the restuarant and bar, glad we had a couple of bottles of wine as it is a bus journey to the bottle shop. Reception staff (1 person) was not very welcoming. The complex has a nice pool and is only a ten minute walk from the gorgeous beach. Please note there is only 1 shop and take-a-way near the beach within walking distance you will need to take the bus or drive to others. The apartment was clean and we were very happy with the apartment. We would stay again, hopefully the bar will be open next time. As some of the other reviews have said they need a new website as it doesn't do the complex and views justice.

The rooms are nearly as promised. Clean and comfortable but Internet didn't work after a day, tv didn't work at all, restaurant closed. Staff are most unhelpful. Even though lots of empty cabins, i was put in one of only two with view of the road, not the bay. No mention of Internet when I checked is so had to climb to reception ( which is up a steep hill) to ask. When it quit working, staff had all gone for the day. No porters. Bar/restaurant both closed but no suggestions of other eating places. Staff knew nothing about the wineries, but suggested I ask the bus drivers. Free continental breakfast was bread, cereal, milk and yogurt left outside in the hot sun . A change of staff attitude and better maintenance would make this a nice place to stay.

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for a room with a bview of the bay.

Stayed here for one romantic night whilst staying with the in laws in Auckland. Booked the day before valentines day and no double rooms left so we stayed in a two bedroom villa for no extra cost. Fantastic location overlooking sea. Website does not do the villas and views justice at all. Rooms were very luxuriously decirated ( we had a white leather corner suite in our lounge area)
Lovely little pool and spa pool if you want it but I recommend the beautiful Palm beach which takes 5 minutes to walk to.
When next in NZ will definitely return and the only thing I would change is to stay longer.

There are no other resorts on Waiheke Island and we purposely booked there over the Christmas holiday for a family reunion as we found that many restaurants in NZ are not open on the 25th and 26. The rooms were clean and efficient but the service was not what we expected. Their website advertises a restaurant which we presumed would be running for Christmas day (resorts usually do) but on arrival found that they are now only running the restaurant for breakfast on any day. We had to scramble to shop on Christmas Eve so we could put together a dinner for 5. No one in the office could tell us weather breakfast would be served Christmas Day (it was). Pool locked up on Christmas day and staff rather disorganized.

Room Tip: If you want to cook for yourselves request a room with a full kitchen.
