“Stay here!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2014

Loved this place as soon as we arrived. Staff are very friendly, the hostel itself is nice and clean. Amazing that you get free wifi, and some delicious free chocolate pudding each evening! We were gutted that we only had time to stay for 1 night.. If you do come to picton, highly recommend the walk up to the viewpoint.. Incredible! Really enjoyed our stay here, highly recommend this hostel! Thankyou very much.

My friend found Sequoia through HelpX. We got in touch with Tim and decided to WWOOF here. What a great experience! The hostel is clean, the kitchen well equipped, organized and they whip up hot chocolate pudding and ice cream every night. For a few hours of housekeeping work, you'll get a bed in the WWOOFer dorm (private), unlimited internet (in the communal areas which is good, so you won't have other guests tapping away at their laptops when you are trying to sleep) and instant family! Picton is small and so many people end up just passing through on the ferry, but I came across heaps of people who stayed for months at a time at Sequoia, just because of the people. I went back twice after my WWOOFing was over. :)

Great welcome, just perfect !

A shuttle took us at the ferry, for free ! Then a man receive everyone really well. Bedrooms clean and warm, beds comfortable. Bathrooms cleans. Kitchen well equipped and clean. Great staff.
The fireplace in the living room and the free wifi are a real plus !!! 5 min walk to the grocery shop.

THE place to go in Picton !

A lovely stay from beginning to end. The hostel is clean, the kitchen well equipped and the rooms are pretty nice. Chocolate pudding and ice cream served every night which is free and delicious! Tea, coffee, sugar, spices and oil are all free as well as unlimited internet which is rare in New Zealand. Free pick up and/or drop off from the ferry terminal which is awesome. The hot tub is lovely!

Three main issues but not major ones and certainly not ones to stop you visiting:

1) Whilst the WiFi is free and unlimited, the rooms at the rear of the hostel (ensuite doubles) cannot connect to it which is annoying seeing as you pay more for the room.

2) The shower is pretty pathetic. Sometimes it just dribbles and is indecisive with regards to temperature. Not sure if the shared bathrooms had this problem.

3) An insane amount of black flies everywhere outside and with the windows open in the hot weather, they are all over you as you try to cook and eat. Whilst I appreciate that flies cannot be helped, there should be something in the kitchen area to detract flies as I was bitten 11 times!

However, this hostel is well run and the people are lovely. It was a pleasure to stay there and you really miss it when you visit some less excellent hostel's!

The sequoia lodge has clean dorms with ensuite bathrooms which are kept very clean. I was lucky and had quiet room mates too. Nice big clean kitchen and the free chocolate pudding really hits the spot after a long hike! Free wifi is patchy and I could only access it in the communal areas but not in my dorm. Free car parking. Friendly staff and nice indoor and outdoor communal areas including chess, hammocks and a hot tub. Only a short walk to the city centre. I would definitely stay here again.

We arrived in Picton, not sure if we'd stay the week. There was only one room available at the Sequoia when we arrived, and booked it straight away. As our plans seem to change day by day, we only booked a few days at a time, each time we went to the reception asking for a few more nights they were very friendly and always tried to fit us in where possible. We decided to stay the week. the hostel is very clean and friendly. free wifi all day, the kitchen is clean and the reception seems to have more brochures than the local isite. All in all a very lovely experience.

I have been travelling for over 4 months (Australia and New Zealand) and you won't believe just how rare it is for a hostel to provide both free wi-fi, and wi-fi that actually works and is good enough to stream YouTube (for example). Well, the Sequoia Lodge has it.

Nicely located close to town (and yet still relatively quiet) and also close to the lovely approx 1.5hr Tirohanga Track walk which provides great views over town and the Marlborough Sounds.

The 4-bed dorm I was in was comfy and spacious enough for 4 people. The communal areas were clean and practical. All in all, a charming and quaint hostel.

Free shuttle to/from the ferry and free hostel shuttles are also few and far between in New Zealand.

Nice one Sequoia Lodge, really enjoyed my stay.
