“5 star backpackers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013 via mobile

Service from staff was excellent, especially Katrin doing much of our bookings before we arrived. Clean and comfortable room. Kitchens, laundries and facilities exceeded our expectations! We also enjoyed the hot tub and garden. It was a home away from home for us. I highly recommend The Villa!

I first stayed in this hostel 15 years ago and stayed a night again in December 2012 and it was just as good now as it was back then. Its a lovely hostel with great atmosphere and staff are fun, friendly and helpful. We had the upstairs double which was top notch with its own bathroom and TV. The main house has plenty of character with a great kitchen and lounge area. The outside courtyard has plenty of nooks and crannies to relax, pool table, fireplace and spa. There is a great bakery next door and your not far from the shops. I would definitley stay here a third time on my next visit.

The staff is nice and helpful - even before you arrive.
The room is alright though not very warm. Toilets and showers are clean. The atmosphere is lovely in this old building !
However, we were taking the ferry at 8 so got up early and were told upon arrival that breakfast would be ready even though no staff would be there that early. We were staying in a double room in another building next door and did not manage to access the kitchen in the main building for breakfast, though we had been told which door to use etc. It simply would not open and no one was there to help. So we were a bit disappointed about this.
Katrin had also told us to be at the bus stop for the ferry pick-up (a few meters down the street) at 7.30, as someone else told us too, but the ferry people actually came at 6.50 to pick us up ! So be prepared to be there super early if you're taking the ferry and don't want to miss it !

Room Tip: If you want to access the kitchen for sure early in the morning, go for the dorms !

Sometimes there are just Mysteries of Life...?
Katrin has managed The Villa for many years and runs it incredibly well for me. She is responsibie for our large travel operation and sells large volumes of ferry tickets and manages our customers bookings, including what times they are supposed to report etc.....besides the times are always on the tickets ...it is difficult to get the times wrong.
Likewise the entry into the main building. we value our guests security and have the room keys open the 'after hours' entry ...all is carefully explained and not too difficult. It is a bit sad for us providing so much free extra things for guests and then get penalized for trying to make most of them available all hours ..rather than just during office hours.
I know every property is different and all have things to take in, sometimes it is a case of 'information overload' and vital bits are missed.
Happy travels always

Stayed for one night, but even then it was apparent that this was a lovely, friendly hostel - you only had to sit down in the communal areas before someone struck up a conversation, and the reception staff were some of the most welcoming I encountered in New Zealand.

Rooms were clean and comfortable, and the free apple pie and hot water bottles were an especially welcome bonus!

Seen the good reviews, but I found the room I had a little run down and the walls paper thin.
Really friendly welcome, but not offered any apple pie ! Missed out there!
Was not shown around, just pointed where everything was on a map, s o did not know about the. Treehouse etc.
Stayed in a different hostel the first night and found it better arranged and fresher than The Villa but realise that everyone has different expectations and requirements when travelling. Several rave reviews suggest this is better for a longer stay, ratherj than my one night.

Summer is always the time the pressure is on. Everyone does have different expectations and levels of need. Often the comment comes from our guests when we show them around they say they would rather 'discover' all for themselves, after all, we are not that big and on a level site. Our reception is manned from 8am until 10pm and there are maps of the hostel facilities in prominent locals.

We regard The Villa as a little like your favourite pair of Slippers, very comfortable, but as it is a genuine 110 years old, some worn patches show up from time to time. The walls are well insulated but it is a wooden house, like most in NZ.

Our 'world famous' apple crumble and icecream is advertised as Winter only, we extend it as long as our apple supply holds out...this year we managed to keep it going until Dec 10th ....disappointing that the reviewer missed out but many others were very happy.

We stayed in an 8 bed dorm for one night before getting the ferry. It's a perfect location for the ferry but we didn't get the best nights sleep. The dorm had a sliding door which was very loud so you woke up every time it was opened. room was small for 8 people and there weren't enough bathrooms. Kitchen was ok, lounge area was good. We did get free apple crumble when we arrived which was yummy! The staff were lovely too. Just needs a bit of updating.

Room Tip: Try to get aprivate or a small dorm.

The joys of the cheapest dorm....the big dorms are the price leaders for a reason, the positive is more opportunities to meet new friends, the downside is more people coming and going.
The Summer is when every potential weakness is exposed, the hostel is busy and it is much harder to maintain the 'peace and quiet' that exists in the off season.
Glad you liked the great service from the Staff and Apple Crumble and Ice cream.

Lovely clean hostel with friendly staff that show you around, well stocked kitchen and nice gardens with lots of cool little hiding places to read, even a treehouse! Lots of blankets and plugs in the rooms too!
