“Booked 4 Months in advance yet in arrival nothing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013 via mobile

Booked the accommodation 4 months in advance and had email confirmation. On arrival I was informed that there was no booking and in an indifferent manner by the owner. It was disappointing. Fortunately I found somewhere else and actually better.

Stayed August 2013

We booked the bus from Christchurh to Akaroa, just for a stay of 2 nights, the bus drop us right in front of the hostel, we were able to check in early, our 5-bed room attached with bath room, which is great and hardly found in other hostel. Room is big enough and the bed is pretty comfortable. Only cons is the garden hangout area is just right in front of our room, pretty noisy and disturbing in the day and night time. Overall it is one of the good choice for Akaroa,

We must have arrived on a bad day compared with other reviewers. Young girl in reception did not give us much info, just showed us to what we think was called The Cottage, at the rear of the premises at the edge of the garden. Room was spacious with small ensuite shower and small kitchen. Unfortunately only one ring of the two ring stove worked but we could also use the main kitchen. Our water heater was also shared by the outside shower/toilet and did not appear to work in the morning so had a bracing experience. Felt our facilities could do with a clean with the whole area needing a bit of a tidy up. No member of staff to speak to when we left (9.30am). Previous reviewer has accurately listed facilities, layout and available items. Not as good as some of the other hostels/backpackers that we stayed in. The long drive from Christchurch was worth it. Akaroa is a lovely area with beautiful lake views and a nice harbourside.

Due to limited availability in Akaroa we stayed at Bon Accord. However, I wouldn't have changed that in retrospect! Clean, friendly staff, nice kitchen, garden with a stream running past it, free bikes to use, free herbs from the herb garden, hammock, the list goes on. Stay here. Its good value and cozy.

A little noisy in the mornings but we were up and our fairly early anyway.

I wonder whether as I sit here and write this the chap who sat in the communal lounge is still sat there? He didnt move from the same seat for the entire time we stayed Bon Accord. I suppose thats not overly useful in a review but have a look when you visit and let me know.

Room Tip: There are self contained apartments out the back in the garden which looked good. Try and get one of...

Maybe the best hostel in my time in the New Zealand. A really quaint place, the Manager (I forget his name) was such a nice guy, really knowledgeable about the area, always greeted you with a smile and asked how things were going, truly excellent service.

The room (we stayed in a double) was large and really well kept, and very comfortable. The kitchen and lounge was also very nice. Only slight drawback was the toilet didn’t have a wash basin, so you had to go to the shower room, but nothing major to worry about

Final Review: As good as hostels get, comfy, helpful and a good location in a lovely part of the world

Stayed one night in a double without bathroom for 69 dollars. Centrally located. Big room, bit musty smelling.
Bathroom and toilet could do with renovating - paint peeling off wall, tired looking shower.
Smallish kitchen, cooking dinner at the same time as other people could be cramped.
Staff didn't tell us anything about the town (first time someone hasn't in the eight hostels we've stayed in so far)
Probably would have stayed at Chez La Mer across the road if they had had a similar priced room as it seemed friendlier and busier.
