Jim and Liz are exceptional hosts. The house seeps of past culture and tastes. Breakfasts are a real treat and top qulaity. The evening wine and nibbles allows you time to review your day, meet others and plan your next day with knowledgable hosts. All this in a town full of history and interesttng activities combines to ensure a real relaxing holiday. We will certainly be back.

From the time you are warmly welcomed by Liz and Jim, until you make a reluctant farewell, the whole experience of Wilderness House, is pure bliss:- Wine and nibbles, comfortable beds and feather pillows, an Akaroa 'special' breakfast, first class decor and the hosts are a mine of information about the local area and beyond. We will be back!

liz and jim are the gracious hosts in this picture postcard B&B which they have rebuilt to modern five star accommodation standards and tastefully decorated with an eye to english country classic. relaxed, warm and inviting are adjectives to describe both the B&B and the hosts

akaroa is a stunning NZ location, with an unique french tradition ... a must do for anyone visiting NZ

Jim and Liz are the most hospitable couple and great hosts. We found the breakfast menus to be tottally yummy! Liz's French toast with banana, bacon and maple syrup was superb, while Jim's Eggs Akaroa was delicious. Bon Apetite!

We arrived late in the afternoon and Jim immediately made us feel welcome. The guest lounge was very inviting with plenty to keep us interested in the way of reading material and, Erica especially, enjoyed looking at the collection of china, which is Liz's passion. The room was very comfortable and lovingly furnished with all the extras. The bed and pillows were comfortable with down pillows and fine linen. Handy to the village, a summertime visit would have us leaving the car behind and walking everywhere and exploring the beautiful gardens. Jim & Liz were very gracious hosts and provided a lovely "happy hour' and superb breakfast.
Thank you Jim and Liz

This lovely b&b surpassed all my expectations! I travel alone which is why I choose b&bs to stay in. This one ticked all the boxes!! The house and huge gardens were amazing. The house is over 130yrs old and so stunning inside, beautifully restored and the most gorgeous bedrooms and comfortable beds. The furnishings and linens are a showcase for Liz's Interior Design business. The garden is to die for. I love finding a spot outside to relax and read, and I counted 16 outdoor seating areas tucked away under wonderful old trees or on a sunny lawn. All I could hear were the birds......this is amazing as this is only a couple of minutes walk from the main town. Jim and Liz were the most friendly and welcoming hosts. Jim's knowledge of the local walks of which there are many, was so helpful and the breakfasts were the best I have had in NZ. The highlight of my stay was the evening wine with Jim and Liz and the other guests. We had so much fun and tasting their own wine from the gorgeous little vineyard behind the house was wonderful. The free wifi internet was an added bonus! I couldn't recommend this place highly enough.

As we entered the long sweeping driveway a peacefulness started to settle upon us. The imposing two story house nests in a sea of wonderful gardens surrounded by lawns, and much to our delight, a small vineyard (we tasted some of last years harvest at the nightly drinks gathering) to the rear of the abode. Our hosts, Jim & Liz, warmly welcomed us to their home. A brief but through overview of the house & amenities ensured we were familiar with "our house". Out room had a view over the gardens with the harbour in the background; a retreat for a special occasion. The room was light and airy & allowed for reading by the large windows; as a coffee aficionado the provision of a plunger and sealed coffee was a nice touch. We asked out hosts for a dinner recommendation and a booking was made--a short stroll from the house.
The evening was cold though the rooms were warm and quiet. A glass of port ensure we could sip and discuss the days events. Breakfast was a delight; fresh coffee, bacon and banana's on french toast-or we could have chosen home baked muesli with yoghurt and fruit--but the taste buds won over for the cooked brekkie. Very helpful hosts(without being intrusive) and a quiet, almost serene atmosphere made us want to stay longer though our time was complete-we will return though.
