“Extraordinary Renovations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2011

We have stayed at Wilderness House a several times over the last five or six years, but a recent visit prompted me to finally write a review. Jim and Liz own one of the best B&B's we have ever stayed in. They are wonderful hosts, very warm and welcoming. It is always a pleasure to enjoy evening drinks with them while tasting the wine from their own vinyard and talking about local history and activities.
The vinyard and surrounding garden is exquisite, and Jim and Liz do an amazing job keeping it beautiful no matter what the season. The house was always truly gorgeous, but we were stunned upon our most recent visit a few weeks ago to see the major renovations they have done! Liz's flair for interior design and her amazing antiques collection have combined to make the house completely extraordinary, enhancing the character of the house while maintaining its historic charm. The rooms are superb, all of them are unique and have beautiful beds and linen. They do a fantastic job with breakfast and the food is well above what we expect from a B&B, even of this calibre. He is also always very generous with his time recommending local walks and attractions, pulling out maps and brochures to ensure we make the most of our time. Akaroa is a beautiful place to visit, and Wilderness House is the perfect place to stay. Thanks Jim and Liz we look forward to seeing you again!

We stayed at Wilderness House for just one night on 4 October 2011 but would have loved to stay for longer. Jim and Liz are excellent hosts and the house is amazing. Recently extensively refurbished to the highest standards and latest building specifications, it made us feel very safe and secure after we had stayed in Christchurch and witnessed the damage done by the Feb. quake. Despite the full refurbishment the house has retained its historic charm. Little details like the pre-dinner drinks, port on return from dinner, and every possible luxury in the room all contributed to a most relaxing and enjoyable stay. We have stayed in many luxurious B&Bs in NZ and the UK, but have found none better than Wilderness House.

Wilderness House is paradise. All recently renovated, it felt safe, solid and warm, and was full of all the little touches that make a stay really special - Liz and Jim really had thought of everything. Comfy bed, great hosts, just completely fantastic. I couldn't recommend it highlky enough, I wish we could have stayed longer.

This was another return visit for us, as Wilderness House is one of our favourite B & B's. Since we were here a year ago, Jim and Liz have completed major work on the house, structural and decorative, such that post-earthquake it is even more structurally strong and in pristine condition.
As always, Jim and Liz's attention to us was great; - pre-dinner drinks of their local wine, dinner reservation made in the village for us, immaculate room complete with fresh flowers from the gorgeous garden, and an excellent breakfast.
Many thanks; we will return - again!

Wilderness House was by far the best accommodation we had the pleasure to stay in during our short trip to New Zealand. Liz and Jim were wonderful hosts with a warm and welcoming nature. The house has been beautifully restored. We stayed in the Fyfe Room which has beautiful views. The decor is in keeping with it's late 1800s build and Liz's eye for interior design has certainly ensured that the house has kept it's period charm. The breakfast was wonderful with lovely fresh products. Michael enjoyed a wonderful freshly cooked eggs Benedict with salmon. Nothing seemed too much trouble. The house is just a short walk from the beautiful bay in Akaroa. For a small town it certainly does not lack in choice of restaurants with many different national fusions. We certainly benefited from Liz and Jim's knowledge of the area. Jim took particular pains to maps out some lovely sites to visit. We felt totally relaxed after our all to short visit. We cannot recommend Wilderness House highly enough.

What a fabulous find. We arrived completing the final leg of our drive holiday through New Zealand to discover the charm of yesteryear combined with the luxury of today well within walking distance to the attractions of Akaroa village. Our hosts, Jim and Liz are the proud owners of a beautiful home built in 1878 that has been recently refurbished to a high standard while still retaining a period feel. We stayed in the Sheppard room which had its own Juliet balcony overlooking the garden and vineyard. Nice touches included new bathroom with underfloor heating, comfortable bed and plenty of room to unpack. Our hosts invited us to use their well appointed guest lounge where we enjoyed tea and coffee and a port beside the antique fireplace. Breakfast was served in the formal dining room with views to the garden. The menu changed daily, included local fresh produce and is far better than what you would find in most hotels. Jim and Liz went out of their way to make us feel welcome in their home and were a great source of knowledge about local attractions and assisted with bookings when needed. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: If you have any special needs, be sure to ask as Jim and Liz will try to accommodate them.
