Decided to use this track to introduce our almost 7 and almost 9 year old to the delights of multi day hiking. Could not have chosen better. The walk was quite challenging for them but with new unique accommodation waiting at the end if each day (twice with ice cream available) they appear to be sold on the idea. The individuality of the nightly stays was a wonderful bonus added to some truly spectacular country to walk through. There is a great variety of terrain you pass through along the way and the sudden changes from pastoral wander to lush rainforest to windswept cliff tops with seals on the rocks below never failed to keep the interest alive. The bit of the track our kids found the toughest was the final 15 minutes down the very steep tarred road into Akaroa. But they'd made it then, and because there is the option for pack cartage, a final 10 minute piggy back was a small price to pay for inducting them successfully into the world of overnight hiking we've been waiting so long to do.
