“Simply amazing!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

When we booked L’Abri for one night we never expected to find such an amazing, fabulous place. L’Abri and its owner, Jane, set the standards for how a proper B&B should be.

Jane made us feel completely at home from the first moment. At the entrance of the house a blackboard welcomed us with our names on and Jane offered us a glass of homemade lemonade as it was a hot day.

Then, once you enter the room the amazing view leaves you breathless. The garden, the fresh flowers in the room, the home baked cookies, the cleanliness, the wonderful paintings. Jane’s immaculate attention to detail is impressive from the spotlessly clean carpet to the 3-layer curtain.

Having breakfast at L’Abri two senses compete with each other, vision and taste! Vision, cause the view from the living room is fantastic and the presentation of the breakfast is superb and taste cause Jane is a great cook. Fresh fruit salad, freshly baked croissants, and incredible eggs (baked eggs with spinach and bacon and French omelette) directly from her hens made breakfast unforgettable.

We are incredibly happy that we stayed even for one night at L’Abri and met with Jane. It was an exquisite experience and we strongly recommend it!!

A lovely B&B overlooking Takamatua Bay and only 2min drive from Akaroa. Extremely well maintained rooms and garden. The deck outside the home is fantastic to relax with a glass of wine. The breakfast was the highlight - Jane is a wonderful cook and she even left welcome home-made biscuits in our room that were simply delicious. Jane was also very helpful and managed to get us a perfect table in one of the only restaurants open in the town on Christmas' Eve. Highly recommended.

L'Abri far exceeded any other bed and breakfast we have ever stayed at. Jane is a wonderful lady who offers more than the ordinary "bed and breakfast" fare. We were not just paying guests but instead we were made to feel very much a part of her beautiful home and lifestyle. Jane has thought of every detail to ensure her visitors have a special stay. Upon arrival we were greeted by Jane, and we noted our names on a "Welcome to L'Abri" black board. Further personal touches were very evident throughout our stay - fresh flowers from Jane's amazing garden in our room, home-baked goodies on a generous hospitality tray and edible flowers accessorising our sumptious breakfasts. Jane's food was sublime and all home-made, from an abundance of produce from her garden, including the freshly laid eggs from the cheeky 'chooks' scurrying around the property! Further to this generous hospitality, the views from L'Abri are absolutely stunning, enjoyed from the tastefully appointed rooms and meandering cottage gardens. Jane has certainly succeeded in providing an exquisite experience. We did not want to leave!

Room Tip: Both rooms are perfect.

We stayed 4 nights at L'abri just outside Akaroa, and it was hard to find fault. The accommodation was extremely comfortable and beautifully clean, with the added benefit of superb views over Akaroa harbour. The breakfasts were also excellent - lots of variety and choice, and the Eggs Benedict was fantastic!
Jane made us feel very welcome in her home, which is a short and easy drive from Akaroa itself. Nothing was too much trouble, and we would recommend L'abri unreservedly if you are looking for luxury B&B accommodation. The itinerant and very free range chickens were an unexpected bonus!

The pictures do not do it justice. It is fabulous and about 5 minutes from the center of Akaroa. The accommodation is beautiful with a great view of the sea. Jane is a fabulous cook and so willing to do all she can to make one's stay really special. I cannot wait to go back there.

Room Tip: This is in a very quiet area and one can hear the birds in the morning and watch the chickens runnin...

Sorry Jane for the late review. It has definitely been a long time coming.

Our stay at L'Abri didn't start off in a great way, due to us putting our faith in the Navman which took us the (very) long way around through Little Akaloa, up long, steep, winding, sheer cliff face roads. Scary stuff!

Once we arrived at L'Abri however, our nerves were instantly calmed, and we felt extremely relaxed. Jane is so lovely and welcoming. First thing Jane did was show us to our room and then offer us a glass of red to calm the nerves, which we gladly accepted.

The room is stunning. Both rooms are stunning. Very clean, spacious, and with the most amazing views of the bay! It was almost like being in paradise. After we'd settled in and unpacked a few things, we decided to wonder on out and explore the surrounds of the property. The house itself is beautiful, and is designed to take in the amazing views of the bay. The lounge/kitchen has uninterrupted views from the floor to ceiling glass sliding doors! Why would you want to leave? Unfortunately, we were a little hungry so we thought we'd go and explore the town and get something to eat. Jane gave us some great suggestions, however due to the time of the year, a lot of places were closed. No biggie.

Anyway, after we'd arrived back, a nice relaxing bath with a glass of red hit the spot, and then off to sleep in the most comfortable bed!

We woke up to a delicious breakfast (see photos). Everything was local or from the property. Free range eggs from the chooks, herbs from the garden, fruit, pastries, toast, etc. What a way to start the day and filling enough to not need to have lunch... or perhaps just a light one, but I digress.

We stayed at L'Abri for 2 nights, which was not long enough. We can't wait to return and next time stay for longer. Thanks Jane for making our stay so special and relaxing!

Room Tip: All rooms are fantastic with the most amazing views!

We stayed just the one night, and Jane made us very welcome in her lovely home, which by the way is a well considered contemporary design with a beautiful view from both the living room and bedroom. Now I'm not much of a Muesli fan, but, the home made muesli had to be tried, and it was delicious! If you are wondering where to stay around Akaroa, I would recommend staying here..
