The 1st thing you see is this lovely restored building with lots of roses and a welcoming host who has your name written on the board outside.
Sharon is the perfect hostess. She and her husband Ian run this place with so much perfection its amazing.
My room had a lovely view of the harbour and had a little sit out which overlooked the garden and the harbour. U can't get enough of the room. Its luxurious, comfortable and the attention to detail was amazing. From the chocs on the pillow to the wine in a decanter to the amazing bedcover to the pot pourri to the makeup remover towelletes/ panadol/ liquid detergent sachets/ to the flowers in the room, garthowen is a delight. The breakfast is fantastic. Wish I could have stayed another night.
From a location perspective u open the gate and u are on the beach. A little walk on either side of the road gets u to all the cafes/galleries. Very good location and well appointed rooms gracious host in Sharon. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. You would be missing something special if u dint stay here.

The Garthowen Akaroa is worth several days of stay. Sharon and Ian are gracious hosts, with a very modern B&B. Quiet, nice bed, full amenities. Sharon is happy to talk about her grandkids, the area and travel. We had a great stay.

So I miscalculated and we ended up needing a place for my parents to stay for one night in Akaroa. Our hosts at Garthowen could not have been more accommodating, and my parents thoroughly enjoyed their stay. The location is perfect, as is their view of beautiful Akaroa harbour. We'd definitely consider staying here again - their 5 Star rating is well earned.

This was our first visit to NZ and after all of the stunning scenery we've seen in the movies, our hopes were high. It was a quick 'taster' visit which encompassed Christchurch, Arthur's Pass National Park and the Banks Peninsula.

Well, the scenery certainly didn't let us down, but suprisingly the people we came across in the first few days and the service they offered did; they weren't exactly friendly or concerned about giving us any value for our hard earned $$$ ... thankfully that all changed when we arrived at Garthowen in Akaroa.

Stunning room with everything you could possibly need and a little bit extra. Great big bath to soak in; amazing shower; DVD and book library; your own balcony overlooking the sea and surrounding rolling green hills; complimentary chocolate, biscuits, tea, real coffee & sherry; free internet in the hallway and all within a skip and a hop to everything in Akaroa. This is a place where I could quite easily stay forever!

The highlight of our stay here though was the hostess with the mostest - Sharon. Who single-handedly managed to redeem our impression of Kiwi's with her friendly disposition and contagious laughter.

The property's resident furry children, Bonnie and Jessie, are so ridiculously adorable that they very nearly got packed in our suitcases. Word of warning: if you decide to let Jessie join you for breakfast, she has the "I'm just so sad and helpless and haven't been fed for days" look down to a fine art!

Unfortunately we didn't get to meet Ian properly until we were leaving, but what a lovely man and full of so many interesting stories. We were astounded to learn that the property was actually only four years old. Sharon and Ian had knocked down the previous property but rebuilt using all of the old wood and fittings - very eco friendly, and what a great job they've done - the place is just gorgeous.

If you're looking for a bit of luxury and lots of comfort, breathtaking landscapes and friendly faces, then I can highly recommend Garthowen. We'll certainly be back.

We've walked past Garthowen B&B many times and have always thought it would be a great place to stay in Akaroa - unfortunately was a bit too much to pay. In mid-winter however the rates are far more reasonable, and Akaroa itself is much quieter.
A nice touch was having our names on the board outside to welcome us. The room was spacious, warm, very clean and had everything we could ask for - even complementary sherry! Admittedly some of the decorations/items in the room were a little odd and seemed out of place in a B&B of this quality.
The lounge and dining room are upstairs (breaksfast can be served outside on the balcony in summer). This gives fantastic views out over Akaroa harbour and the surrounding hills. Perfect!
A good choice of breakfasts was available, despite the owners being away at the time. Unforunately we'd already eaten too much the night before - some excellent restaurants in Akaroa.
Couldn't ask for a better location in Akaroa - right in between the two parts of the village so everything is within walking distance.

Garthowen is a wonderful B&B in a superb location. I received mixed advice of whether to say in Akaroa or go on a day trip from Christchurch. I am SOOO glad I decided to stay the night at this beautiful B&B. Sharon was a delight (Ian was away) and she provided me with an excellent restaurant recommendation and a splendid breakfast. I had a front room with a porch and a view of the bay – this was a BEAUITFUL room and very well appointed. I really enjoyed my time here and the only mistake I made was not staying longer!
