“Great location and great hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2011

This B&B is right by the waters edge and within a few minutes walk of the main attractions in Akaroa (the restaurants and the quayside). It's not the cheapest B&B you will find but it is very good value - the room quality is very high (way beyond the quality you will find in most hotels) and the breakfast was excellent. The hosts, Sharon and Ian, are charming and were extremely helpful - we did the swimming with dolphins trip on our last morning and although we had to move out of our room as new guests were arriving they kindly provided another room to shower and change in when we got back. All in all a very pleasant stay.

This B&B is about service. I arrived cranky with a cold I had contracted prior to the holiday, cranky with the car rental at the airport, and annoyed at the fog on the way into Akaroa. But Sharon's greeting at the door, her helpfulness in getting us settled and booking us a table at a superb but crowded local restaurant was just the perfect reminder that we were on holiday. The room appointments with personalised towel markers and fine toiletries, comfortable bed and excellent cooked breakfast made for a wonderful stay in this quaint, picturesque village .

This B&B is in a convenient location right on the main street with a view of the bay. But, it wasn't noisy. Beautiful garden, comfortable room with many amenities. Breakfast a treat with lots of choices (be warned, it's huge!). Hosts, Sharon & Ian, are the most delightful couple - knowledgeable, helpful, interesting. They even called a restaurant we were having dinner at one night when it was raining and offered to come pick us up.

Room Tip: Two rooms are on the front of the house with a porch/patio looking out on the bay. Two rooms in the...

Wonderful experience as everything we wanted to do for the weekend was within walking distance. Hosts were friendly and personable. Amenities were impeccable, as was the brekkie.

Highly recommend others to consider staying at Garthowen. We were celebrating a special birthday for my wife and Sharon booked a local restaurant for us and upon arriving, she was greeted warmly and given a complimentary champagne. The entire experience ranks at the top of our many memorable stays at B&B's in NZ and US.

Room Tip: Rooms at front have view of Akaroa Harbour.

We first visited Akaora 6 years ago on a day trip from Christchurch and decided to stay on our next visit which was in September this year. After reading the reviews on Tripadvisor we decided to stay at Garthowen and were thrilled with our stay.
Sharon & Ian are wonderful hosts and their home is lovely. We were lucky enough to be given one of the front rooms which was delightful. In our spacious room, tea and coffee making facilites with Sharons yummy homemade biscuits and also port in a decanter for a nightcap which my husband really enjoyed . After a good sleep on the very comfortable bed with beautiful linen, wakng up and looking over the harbour in the morning - Magical !!!!

The best was yet to come BREAKFAST !!!! Started with Ians homemade museli which was yummy, served with yogurt and fresh fruit. Followed by a choice from the menu which included eggs benedict and farm fresh scrambled eggs served with smoked salmon. Delicious. There was also croissants and home made preserves and of course tea and coffee. All served on beautiful china. Needless to say we did not eat much for lunch !!!

Sharon gave us restaurant recommendations and also told us about a lovely drive to take.
We made use of the guest lounge , having afternoon tea or an evening drink looking out over the harbour.
We really enjoyed our 2 night stay at Garthowen . Thankyou Ian & Sharon

My husband and I recently stayed at Garthowen, Akaroa and thoroughly enjoyed the B and B and Akaroa itself. Sharon and Ian were so warm and welcoming, we felt we had know them for years. Sharon's breakfasts are amazing, delicious and very well presented. Her attention to detail is just amazing, little details make the difference the home made biscuits, port and pretty china cups in the rooms. Garthowen has a five star rating and we felt it was richly deserved. Thank you, Sharon and Ian, Garthowen was one of the highlights of our trip.
