“Excellent, though a little expensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2011

We stayed at Garthowen due to our previously booked accommodation suffering from earthquake damage. It was quite expensive compared with the other 5 star accommodation we stayed in.
However, Sharon was a lovely, warm and welcoming host and the location couldn't have been better - sea front, close to restaurants, shops etc.
We had booked the Kaka room but were given the Kerula on the ground floor - a lovely room, but didn't afford the same views or privacy due to being so close to the footpath/road.

Stayed in Akaroa for one night in April. Sadly, we didn't have longer as I would have liked more time at Garthowen. Our hosts were lovely, Ian and Sharon really make you feel welcome and at home. The view is truly beautiful and you can hear the lake at night from your bedroom window.

Pros
- The linen is absolute exquisite and the beds extremely comfortable.
- Excellent location
- complementary Port in your room which we enjoyed from the guest lounge.
- Guest lounge has magnificent views over the lake and mountains beyond.
- lovely home-cooked breakfast
- wifi
- beautifully appointed bathroom and fittings

Cons
- Our room was a little bit dark (Kea), because it was off to the side so not much of a view. When you book, ask for a room on the front of the house.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the house

Beautiful rooms, location is literally across the road from the beautiful lake, lovely restaurants, delicious breakfast cooked up by our hosts. Lovely lounge for guests to sip on complimentary sherry and watch the sun go down (best part!). Rooms are beautiful, hosts were helpful and chatty. Very homely and warm. I would go back tomorrow!

Garthowen has the perfect blend of sumptuous breakfasts, breathtaking sea views and impeccable attention to detail with home style charm.
This was our last stay after almost 4 weeks of traveling the South island. Having stayed at Garthowen two years earlier we knew our three nights at Akaroa would be the best of all and we were not disappointed. Attention to detail from our names on the welcome blackboard to the fabulous breakfasts, cozy bed and king size rooms was just as good for our second visit.
Thanks Ian and Sharon for making our stay at beautiful Akaroa so memorable.

Room Tip: This is as good as it gets in a stunning location

A delightful stay in a beautifully presented B&B. Ian and Sharon were friendly and welcoming and their recommendation for dinner was superb. The views were spectacular and the breakfast lived up to it's billing. The one regret that we have, is that we didn't stay longer to fully appreciate all that Garthowen has to offer.

Room Tip: Front rooms provide the best views of the ocean

At Garthowen you are welcomed by Sharon and Ian, a charming couple. The Kereru room was the one we booked and it was absolutely stunning, with ocean view. All the bedrooms were on the ground floor with the dining room and guest lounge on the first floor which we think worked well. Quality at Garthowen was exceptional, the room was spacious, the furnishings were top class, the bathroom was fabulous and the toiletries were lovely. There was also a basket with various bits and pieces in case you had forgotten something. Breakfast was very good and the guest lounge and dining room were lovely with stunning views over the ocean. Location was excellent with the quay (for boat trips) and restaurants within walking distance.

Room Tip: Further room at front avail with ocean view.

We recently spent two weeks in the South Island and had not initially planned to stay in Akaroa, but so glad we did. The place was lovely and so was Garthowen B&B. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and clean. The views from the upstairs lounge and dining room are beautiful. Garthowen is in an excellent location situated right in the middle of town, on the waterfront and in walking distance to some good restaurants. Sharon and Ian were lovely hosts – very welcoming and helpful. Sharon suggested a boat trip on Akaroa Harbour which we really enjoyed.

We choose Akaroa as we were unable to spend the time we had planned in Christchurch and although it was over an hour’s drive away from Christchurch, it is definitely worth the effort. We even did a return trip on the Transalpine train from Akaroa. It was a long day but achievable.

I understand that following the Christchurch earthquake it was stated that the road to Akaroa was closed. However, we encountered no problems at all with access to and from whilst we were there (13-15 March).

One of the nicest places we visited in NZ.
