“My new favourite restaurant!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

Went 7.30pm Tuesday night 29th October with four friends. The place was full on arrival but after a short 5 minute wait we were shown to a table near the window. I was glad we had our own table as the other option was to be seated at large shared trestle tables. The venue is great - beautiful rustic decor. We had bread and oil to start - lovely. We all ordered our own dishes and shared the potatoes in duck fat. My dish was brilliant - roast salmon with black pudding and brussel sprouts - delicious. Dessert we shared the peanut ice cream, creme freche and oreo biscuit combination - glad we shared this as it was too big for one person. We ordered two between five of us as not everyone wanted dessert. I thought for the quality of ingredients for the prices were really good. The only suggestion I have is for contents of cocktails to be listed. It is noisy when full but not sure how that could be changed.I had read negative reviews about the staff but can honestly say we had great service from all staff that attended to us. We will be back.

“Innovative food, presentation and place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

Lucky Fremantle, the Cinderella city of Western Australia's capital, has a new bold place for eating. Bread in Common located in one of the oldest and historic parts of Fremantle, has turned an old warehouse into a new way of communal dining with most tables being long benches. Yet it is definitely not boarding school fare. We went there on a late Wednesday morning. As we hoped the place was not packed and we looked forward to a leisurely early lunch. The staff were friendly, attentive and efficient. The suggested way of ordering is by sharing plates between people eating together.

The menu is printed on coloured copy paper on a font like an old typewriter and printed on a ink duplicator that I used to use when working at a shipping company down the road in my school holidays.

The Brunch menu (10am-5pm) is set out in five sections: Wood-fired organic flour bread (and acctroutrements); Cured meat; Plates (14 options); Toasted sandwiches; and Sweets. The ingredients are fresh, quality and very eclectic in combination. We had the bread (traditional village common loaf and sourdough wholemeal) with olive oil and house churned butter with hazelnut dukkah. All fabulous but the stand out for me was the dukkah, not too spiced or salty and the variety of other seeds kept whole and not ground into dust. We shared the lamb ribs, mint, chilli, black garlic plate; and the asparagus, egg, broad beans, peas, cracked wheat, pecorini, plates. There was self interest with both of us as he is a lamb lover and I am a asparagus, egg and broad bean lover. The asparagus plate was wonderful and we both shared. The combination of flavours was wonderful. The lamb was tasty and fatty BUT lambs are meant to be fatty and the fat is where a lot of the flavour is with meat. Maybe a suggestion to chef - rename the ribs to reflect the content of meat and juicy flavoursome fat.

We didn't have sweets but we did have a Colonial Kolsch - a wheat beer, very good and Founders Porter - yum, then a bottle of Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc from Aotearoa/NZ - very nice. The wine list is one of the most varied we have seen in Australia. While we love our Western Australian wines and Australian wines there are others from around the globe to be experienced at Bread in Common.

Overall Bread in Common for us was worth the short drive to the Cinderella City.

“Yay... something new and funky in Freo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

This place is soooo cool. I almost don't want to share this secret. Located in an awesome spot just off the cuppacino strip this is a gem!!! Has been renovated so beautifully I could sit and look at the design/decore all day. You need to go just to check out the design and styling.
Yes it is pricey but the coffee is great and the food is very good. Brunch til 5pm is a brilliant idea. We need more places like this in Freo!!!!

“Very disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2013

The decor was great....the service very good...everything else was rubbish..tables to long,
I do not like sitting next to and if you are in a group with odd numbers also facing a stranger...
Food plates very small , not enough as they suggest to share......
Very noisy.....very expensive.....
Average bread....Cold Lamb fatty lamb....indifferent sausage......Potatoes were tasty. definitely not a good place for an evening meal..........Maybe OK. For a light lunch. An Expensive Light Lunch.....
