We chose Great Mellie based on reviews and their license status: they had to charge corkage rather than sell wine. We like very sweet wine with our meals, and we bought an excellent sweet wine at 1st Choice liquor and wine store in the Leopold Hotel on Canning Highway. We could not reserve for a Friday night on their website, so we phoned the restaurant from Jakarta a week in advance and made a reservation.
We were grateful that the portions were not as big as in the US, so we could each order a main course. I ordered red emperor in shimeji mushroom dashi on risotto galette. It was very good, but I suspect I would have found it more tasty if the fish and risotto were not immersed in dashi. My wife's duckling breast, parmesan gnocchi, warm baby spinach leaves, and baby carrots glazed with spiced honey was also very good. We felt eager to return and try the sirloin.
We loved both desserts: a lavender creme brulee that really tasted of lavender (we can see why lavender scent was so highly prized in ancient Greece and Rome), and a warm chocolate tart with a spoonful of ice cream. A man-sized scoop of ice cream would have made it even more satisfying.
The most memorable taste of our evening was a small surprise amuse bouche of mushroom soup with reduction of balsamic vinegar, provided at the beginning of the meal. It tasted so good that we had to ask what kind of mushrooms were in it, and we were told they were button mushrooms.
We arrived when the restaurant opened at 6:30 on a Friday night. When we left, eleven out of about 12 tables were occupied. We made a mental note that Great Mellie is a small and popular restaurant. Our server was friendly, charming, and helpful, and the owner/manager was always present, ensuring everything went smoothly. We were told that Mellie was the name of the lover of the previous owner, and after three years, the current owner has never seen a reason to change the name of the restaurant.
