Lauterbrunnen is a great town in which to stay to explore the area. I would not recommend staying in Interlaken and you’d have to do a lot of back-tracking if you stayed in areas past Lauterbrunnen (Wengen, Murren, etc.). For this reason, we booked the Hotel Silberhorn. The hotel is very close to the train station, although it is up a fairly steep incline which you’d have to get used to if you plan to walk anywhere in the area. If the 2 minute walk up the hill bothers you, the several flights of stairs to get to your room (no elevator) will certainly bother you more. The room we stayed in was like something out of the 1970s. The bathroom walls and floor were covered in orange and green linoleum. That was pretty funny. It was definitely not a pretty room by any means. The “satellite” tv had about 5 channels, and you’d better have remembered your own shampoo and soap as the tiny packet wouldn’t have even washed ½ of my hair. Past the Motel 6 feel of the room, we did have a nice view of the waterfall from our deck. We ate at the restaurant in the hotel both nights we stayed. I would definitely recommend that. We read in multiple reviews that the family who owns and runs the hotel was very friendly. I certainly didn’t meet any overly friendly staff. I was actually very disappointed as they were the least friendly hotel staff we met during our two weeks in Italy and Switzerland. All-in-all, I would recommend Lauterbrunnen as a great town to stay in, but I don’t know that I’d recommend the Hotel Silberhorn—perhaps if that’s the best you could get in town. If we go back ever, I’d do a lot more research on other hotels to stay at which we might care for more.
