“great expoerince until we came to pay : be careful of upgrade offer”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

Had a great experice here. The staff were frienldy and helpful. Yes the hotel is dated, but the location is supurb, fantastic views. Restaurant food excellent. Reception is only open for very short times. Causing problems if you want to check in or out at other times. Note if you book the breakfast and want to head off early, the restaurant does not open until 7.30 .. so you are out of luck. Our gripe is with an upgrade offer. We were offered an upgrade with 2 price options.. one if we took breakfasts one without. the price offer was written down. We accepted the offer. On check out my elderly mother was forced to pay double what we had agreed. The host yelled at her and tore up the bill, demanded to see me. We had headed out on an early trip, and by the time of our return reception would be closed. She had no option but to pay. I have contacted the hotel and expressed my frustration. A week later no response. This spoilt what would have been a lovely experience.

We just stayed in Lauterbrunnen for a week on a BASE jumping trip and had dinner at Hotel Schutzen almost every night. The food and service was fantastic and kept us coming back. The owner Andreas made us feel very welcome, joining us for drinks several nights and sharing lots of great stories about the history of the hotel and Swiss culture.

We will definitely be back many times..... Try the schnitzel and the rosti!

Our room is on the second floor, facing the waterfall, so the view is unbeatable. The room and bathroom are very dated but clean. Wash basin is outside the bathroom. Bathroom is very tiny. Check-in time is only 4 - 8 pm. We came early and left the luggage in their cloakroom, but had to rush back in time for fear that we couldn't check-in. The check-in process took some time. Wi-fi is functioning well. Breakfast is offered at CHF 19, which I think it is way too expensive so we didn't have breakfast or any mean there. And also because there is one another good restaurant near by which we wanted to try.

We stayed here for two nights and it reminded me of visiting my grandmother years ago at her house that her ancestors had lived for almost 200 years, with the last renovation being done some 30-40 years before my first visit. Yes, there have been some refurbishments in the last few years, as some reviewers have noted. From what I saw they were few and far between, and the place seemed very tired from all the wear and tear of the tourists. That said, hygiene was not compromised, to the management's credit.

Still, I'd not return because I think the owner was running it like a "ma and pa shop" with little inclination for professionalism. We arrived at lunch time, and had to ring the doorbell at the hotel entrance (located right next to the restaurant). A big, bearded guy opened the door and after a simple greeting told us that check in time was 4-8pm. As for our luggage, we could leave it in the ski room upstairs. We took our stuff up, and found a room with two to three pieces of luggage and some ski gears. We left our heavy bags there and went away with our valuable belongings, leaving the door unlocked. While I didn't really worry about leaving our luggage there, I still think management should take the luggage issue more seriously.

We then went up to Jungfraujoch and didn't return until after 7pm. The same big guy checked us in. Again he was very friendly and efficient, and told us that payment would be made at 4-8pm the evening before check out, and that check out time would be 8-10am. Settlement could be made in cash, or by credit card in which case there would be a 1.7% surcharge being the card company's fee. That surcharge was something I was not prepared for.

Our room was on the second floor, and was clean and reasonably spacious. There was a double bed (as usual in Europe, two single beds pulled together), a single bed, a wardrobe, a desk and a chair - that's it. The bathroom was very small with a shower cabinet and a toilet, while the washbasin was actually located outside the bathroom in the bedroom near the entrance. The beds appeared to be reasonably new (probably less than five years old) but all other furniture and fixtures were rather old (easily 20-30 years old). There was no air conditioning but that was not a problem because after the brief afternoon heat things cooled down very quickly. Every thing was in working order, except that we could not open the safe.

We had dinner at the hotel restaurant on the first night. Please see my separate review about that experience. The next evening, we settled our bill before going off to dinner and laundry at Camping Jungfrau (also reviewed separately). And on the third day, we checked out at 10am as required. All in all, our stay was okay but nothing memorable.

Our room had a street view over the restaurant patio. We had a view of the world famous Lauterbrunnen waterfall. We slept with our windows open and heard sounds of the distant waterfall all night. Made for great sleeping. The front desk staff was professional, friendly and thorough in their check-in process. Quiet time at the hotel is from 10pm - 7am. The family upstairs had children that they allowed to run, jump and yell past that time. After a complaint to the front desk, the remaining nights were better. Nice job front desk! The location to train and bus service is excellent. And, if you need parking, they have a nice lot at the hotel.

The only problem with this hotel is that they do not have a way to hang the shower head on the wall so it is a hand shower only - in a tub. As Americans, we found this a bit awkward but not enough to discourage staying here.

Lauterbrunnen has water fountains all over town where you can refill your water bottle with clean, cold alpine water. Take advantage of that because it is the BEST water you will ever drink!

Room Tip: Ask for a street view with the balcony. Some rooms don't have a balcony. You can only see the...

Certainly this is an average hotel in a wonderful place. The front desk staff is pleasant and accommodating. The rooms are average European style, definitely not luxe, but clean and the beds are comfy. So if you are just staying for a bit, and your needs are simple, give it a try.

The Owner, Andreas appears to have bullying issues, and probably is best avoided. His attitude and approach to clients was interesting. He even said he did not care if we gave his hotel a bad review. This was unusual, since we never mentioned or suggested anything about reviews.

I see Andreas is good about responding to reviews and is aware of them. He probably has a lot of difficult clients and has seen all stripes of visitor in his long experience so who is to say he is wrong?

In other circumstances, this man might be a fine fellow to have a drink and a laugh with. But there are some edges there. He apparently was disappointed with the room assignments made for us by HIS staff, and took the opportunity to have a go at us the next morning.

His "suggestions" about why we did not eat breakfast at his hotel (it is better next door) and bullying conduct made my wife, mother of 3 grown men, throw up and cry the first morning of our stay. We found out later he did the same thing to my Navy officer niece when we were not around, although she did not throw up.

The next morning I paid every charge he could think of, just to get away. My wife and I checked out and drove home, a 2 day trip in itself. This solved his problem, and it solved ours, so everyone was happy.

Of our stay, leaving was the best decision of all.

Room Tip: Get room facing waterfall, with a balcony

Stayed here the first night of a visit for a conference in Interlaken. Lauterbrunnen is a great location at the end of the train line up from Interlaken. The hotel is a five minute walk from the station, and has a nice location with great views from the room and the patio restaurant. The low ceilings and door did cause a few bumps (I am 6' 5" so that happens in other rooms as well!), but the room was very nice and comfortable. The staff were very helpful at check-in, with bag storage before and after check-in / -out, and with suggestions on places to visit and hike. We ate a lunch and dinner here, and both were very nice. The rosti was outstanding, and a highlight meal for the whole trip!
