“My first time in a Pousada”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

Very nice hotel overall. We stayed in off season so it wasn't very crowded. The location was excellent for walking down to town. The parking was very convenient. The GPS found the location straight to the front door, no problem. Rooms very clean and comfortable.

The special dinner was disappointing. There were probably around 7 tables of guest and one waiter. The dining room itself, was very boring and did not have any ambience or good atmosphere. The waiter ran through hurriedly on wooden floors trying to accommodate everyone. It made it seem hectic. It was an expensive meal, all couples. The food was average. But the dining experience itself was poor. I would rather walk into town and pay less and have a great atmosphere.

The hotel itself and the rooms are great. The staff was very pleasant.

The Convento da Graca is one of the many Pousadas de Portugal; and as the name would imply, this property is a former convent. The building is lovely and elegant, with a charming cloister and wide, sweeping corridors.

A friend and I shared a superior, twin room, which was located in the original building (there is also a modern addition). The accommodation was very spacious, with wonderfully comfortable beds, good storage space, desk, minibar, sufficient lighting, plenty of electrical outlets, and windows for natural light and fresh air if desired. The room had a large entryway, off of which were the compartmentalized bathrooms: one with sink and tub/shower, the other with sink and enclosed toilet/bidet. This made for great convenience when sharing a room, as both were outfitted with convenient electrical outlets, as well. Our room looked out over a small plaza and lovely park.

The history of the building is evident, as the former convent has enormous hallways, wide staircase (yes, there is an elevator), and an enclosed courtyard, with covered walkways. There is also a convenient car park, which is closed and secured at night, and a very nice looking pool, located between the car park and the newer building addition.

The service was pleasant and accommodating, although I could have done without the pitch to vote for an "employee of the month." The breakfast room was large and the buffet was more the adequate to start the day.

Tavira is a small city, and the Pousada is within easy walking distance of everything. Pricing at the Pousadas is very reasonable, and if you're 55 or older, you can get a nice discount. I reserved through the website, and got a prompt response when I emailed to confirm my reservation just prior to travel. This is my first and only experience with Pousadas de Portugal, and I would book another.

Room Tip: I'd ask for a room in the original building -- they may all be "superior" rooms, but t...

We spent 5 nights at the Convento da Graca and we truly enchanted and delighted at our experience. It started off a little wobbly as our first evening meal was a disaster, the Chicken Wellington was more wellington than chicken. However the lovely manager realised that there was a problem and turned a negative into a plus. if only more hotel managers realised that any problems if handled correctly can actually enhance things - as in this case and our thanks go to the Manager. Our suite was roomy and comfortable, the only criticism was the heating. The weather had turned colder and the bedroom heating was not working. However the bed was comfortable and conducive to good sleep! Breakfasts for the first 4 days were served at table and were first class, on the last day it was a buffet and perhaps not quite as good since hot items by definition were not quite so fresh but still satisfactory! Not that we wanted to watch television but I have to say the placement in our room was a little difficult and would benefit from being on a swivel wall mount!. The ambience was amazing and it was easy to imagine being transported back in time. We were sad to leave.

Room Tip: We would recommend that you go for the Almansoor suite, as we did, you won't regret it!

We stayed in 4 pousadas during our trip to Portugal and Convento da Graca was our best experience. First Tavira is probably the town we liked best on the Algarve coast. Then the pousada is well located on the hill and within a short distance from the center of town. The hotel is an old convent that was refurbished with very good taste. The rooms are large and comfortable and the corridors and stairs are impressive.
We had dinner at the restaurant of the hotel the first night. It was my wife's birthday, and they had picked that fact from her passport when checking in. So we were surprised when the waiter wished her a happy birthday, and offered us a glass of sparkling wine then at the end of the dinner a small cake with a candle. In addition the dinner was very good and the service impeccable.

Thirty years ago I stayed at the then excellent Pousada d'Infanta in Sagres.
Returning to the Algarve with my wife who is a wheelchair user and unable to walk, I thought it would be good to try a different Pousada; it proved to be very, very different indeed from the one I had experienced in 1978.
Although the original old Convent building is beautiful, a quite horrible extension and outdoor swimming pool has been added.
More distressingly the decor throughout the hotel lacks any subtelty or flair - the pictures in the bedrooms are standard 'bought by the square metre' daubs, the curtains ugly and some of the 'historic objects' in the corridors cheap reproductions.
Even the lovely cloister is marred by a ghastly statue and surrounding pool that looks as if it has been transplanted from a municipal swimming bath.
The (rightly deserted) Bar is uncomfortable & drab and very poorly stocked with not one local brandy or liqueur.
Worst of all, however, is the breakfast which is truly grim. The room where it is served is dark and drab, which may be designed to mask the frightfulness of the 'buffet' - fatty sausages, tomato halves and the horrific congealed mess that passes for scrambled eggs.
Only one heating element of the 'do it yourself toaster' works - so even toast is unattainable. The the coffee - from an urn - is luke warm, brackish and offensive.
There are almost no staff. A two star hotel in Vienna would be ashamed of such a deplorable level of service. Having reeled away on the first morning we decided not to risk dinner and took ourselves to local cafes and restarants, thereafter.
Overall, I found this place pretentious and dispiriting - Pousadas were a lovely concept but this one, at least, has all the hall marks of 'crass corporate blight' at its very worst. It represents possibly the worst value for money that I have found in Eurpe in the last few tears - and that includes some ghastly stays in London.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere

The hotel has a perfect location in old Tavira and has been beautifully restored.
The inner yard with fountain and yellow walls is fantastic.
Wonderful pool area and excellent breakfast.
The hotel service was also very good.
Room 7 and 8 have pool view.

Stunningly restored from a convent to a hotel with rooms with all the modern conveniences you could ask for. Breakfast was slightly disappointing particularly the presentation of the buffet. Staff went out of their way to help. Double room that was booked was in fact two singles pushed together.
