“It´s fine - if you are not misled by the 4 * rating”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2009

The hotel is well sited up a bit of a hill on the edge of the historic area. It´s a big modern hotel - half the rooms look out over the rooftops of Tavira. The rooms are reasonably sized, though the beds are small. Balconies. There is heating, ventilation (clothes can dry overnight). There is a big breakfast buffet. There is an outdoor swimming pool and a splashing around pool. The reception staff are helpful and friendly. You can hire a key for the room safe at €3 a night. There are internet terminals at €1 for ten minutes.

Downsides: poor internal sound insulation. Room fittings ill-fitting (cupboard doors only open with bangs that could presumably be heard next door, loose light fittings). Cheap toiletries, haphazardly replaced. Undrinkable breakfast fruit juice.

If you are not misled by the 4 *s and get a reasonable rate it is fine. I was satisfied.

Tavira feels relaxing.

Just returned from a 7 night stay - we couldn't wait to get back to the UK. The hotel is not as advertised, it is noisy, the gym was not working (being rebuilt currently and this adds to the day noise), housekeeping would not change the sheets until we complained and insisted (five days in). Staff are friendly, but very limited in what they can do to assist. Wanted a relaxing break utilising the hotel facilities - no sports room, no snooker room etc. Faulty Turkish bath only expels cold steam. Sauna was ok. Indoor pool needs cleaning.

i have just came back from a week at the Porta Nova hotel.. Overall this is a lovelly hotel.. not quite the 4* we were expecting.. The Staff are fantastic, the hotel is in need of a lot of refurbishment.. we found it extreemly noisy with chairs scraping on the tiled floors.. room doors being slammed at all hours of the night..( a bit of sound insulation would not go amiss), people shouting in corridors.. none of which was adressed by staff.. to make things worse.. there was a swimming gala on at the local pool .. this ment the hotel was full of young adults.. in sports wear at all times ( noise unbearable) meal times were like a bun fight or being back on school meals,, i myself was pushed out of the way so they could get to the food..this is a shame as the young waiters in the returaunt were total gentlemen, and before the masses arrived they were courtious at all times, but were exasperated at the way they had no controll over the standard of the clientelle..basically no self respecting 4* establishment should be ran this way.. or treat thier hardworking staff this way..Hotel porta nova is/could be a fantastic hotel even upto a 5* with a little forethought.. unfortunatly sleep depravation has totally spoilt this for us ,, which is a real shame as i have said because the staff are fantastic, i do feel after speaking to a few guests that they may have lost a few customers because of this.. FANTASTIC STAFF....

We have just returned from a 10 day holiday in Tavira, Portugal. The hotel was classed as a 4* hotel, however i dont think it really matched up to 4*'s. It was a nice hotel, good location to Tavira. But was pleased we got a good deal on it, wouldnt have been happy to pay the full price for what it was.We paid £800 for 10 days for two people with breakfast included. It said in the advert that it had an indoor swimming pool, a jacuzzi and a gym. The health club was only open between 6.30 pm- 8.30pm, which consisited of a large bath tub for the jacuzzi/indoor pool and you had to pay 5 euros for a swiming cap to use it. The only thing that was ok was the sauna.
The breafast was buffet style, and was an ok standard, but i have had better in 3* hotels.
To be honest I think the hotel is good for its location, as Tavira is a real gem to visit in the algarve...

Me and my boyfriend stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in April 2008.

Upon arrival reception staff were incredibly polite and helpful and throughout our stay they really helped us with any questions about the area and gave great tips on places to eat etc. The main lobby area is very nice and the hotel from the outside looks great especially at night.

Our room was very clean, the bathroom exeptionally so. Cleaners checked in on the room everyday and replenished our supplies of toiletries and towels. The pool area was so so so so nice, the pictures don't even do it justice.

In terms of food we only stayed for the breakfast and enver ate dinner or tea here so we can't comment on those. The breakfast was very nice indeed with a large range of hot food aswell as cereals rolls yoghurts etc. Also all drinks coffee orange provided.

On the whole the area was very nice and a trip down to the river is recommended. However we did find that Tavira was a very quiet place with little to do. Also as we don't speak portugeuse finding a place to eat was not easy and when we did we usually had crazy women trying to feed us snails ( it only happened once mind :) ). So if you are looking for a wild place to visit this is not for you, more like a quiet get away for a long weekend which is what we did.

Is supposed to be 4* but is really 3*

Restaurant is dark and sweaty with poor food choice and just OK quality. We had booked b & b but only had breakfast once. We went down for dinner once but left before eating. Reception is huge behind the desk and cramped for guests.

Balcony had several birds nests on it which we were informed could not be moved until birds had flown the nest thus we asked for a different room which we eventually got.

Roof top bar does offer fantastic views over the city at night but drinks are expensive.

Tavira itself is a lovely place for a relaxing break and is perfect for day trips to busier resorts or Spain. Island beach via ferry or aquataxi is excellent.

This is the first holiday my hubby and i have taken without our children (who are now too cool to be seen with us!). The location of the hotel is great, very central and you havent to walk far to reach the small square with the wonderful little corner Cafe to chat with the locals who are extremely friendly. It was nice to walk around Tavira and not to have loud music and drunken tourists falling out of the bars! Its a very peaceful place and I felt totally relaxed. The hotel was ok but definetly not 4 Star. We were given room number 244 which is overlooking the pool but also a giant LOUD generator which is on 24hours a day, we did complain and were moved to the front of the hotel which was so much better. The generator does spoil an otherwise lovely pool area where you dont have to queue up for sun beds as there are plenty available, mind you that pool is freezing when you first get in but I loved watching peoples faces as they entered the look of shock on their faces was funny! the bar at the pool is expensive for drinks and snacks as is the panoramic bar which is mostly empty. We had breakfast included with our stay which is a buffet style that can get very busy and although its not great is does set you up for the day. Our room was cleaned everyday which was nice and if wanted you could have clean towels everyday. The staff were ok but not that friendly . There is a steep hill up to the hotel that we didnt mind but older people might find hard work to walk up. There are lots of restaurants in the area but we found the ones the locals used had the best food and also excellent value for money, any local house wine is really nice and only costs on average 5uros, the local beer is only 1euro and really nice too. Plenty of shellfish available and I'm definently going to miss the local dish of Cataplana its wonderful. The beach can be reached by ferry at a cost of 1.50euros which is well worth it as it is stunning you can catch a train style bus outside of the hotel but this is 5 euros and you still have to get another boat to reach the island and have to pay 5 euro to get back. All in all Tavira is a lovely place to chill out but I wouldnt stay at the same hotel again.
