“Wonderful hotel, wonderful location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

Had a brilliant holiday at the Porta Nova Hotel in the second and third week of October. There was a very high level of cleanliness in all parts of the hotel both in the public areas (including garden and outdoor pool) and our room. We had a lovely quiet spacious room, overlooking the back, with near views across the gardens of a former monastery then beyond to the historic centre with church towers and castle area, with the Ilha de Tavira, Quatro Aguas and the sea in the distance. We spent pleasant evenings sat on the balcony with a glass of wine as the sun set.
There was a huge selection at the breakfast buffet, all of good quality. The staff were pleasant, polite, helpful and showed a high level of professionalism.
Within 5 minutes walk there were small restaurants and shops, riverside walks, and down the road a lovely bakery whose cakes were to die for! The bus station and Porta Nova Railway station are both close providing good links to nearby places of interest.

Room Tip: Back of the hotel faces either the monastery gardens, like ours did, or the pool. Front of the hote...

As with many things, the price bears great relevance to what you expect in return.

We paid just £130 for a full week, room only at this hotel.

To be honest we weren't expecting much, but were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived. The hotel is quite an impressive building, looks smart, and is always clean. The room was immaculate, the bathroom only a couple of minor imperfections, and most importantly hot water on demand! Everything worked correctly in the room, the cleaner did a great job, and there was plenty of room. My only negative comment would be of the other hotel guests making noise, although this responsibility lies with the people visiting the hotel in my opinion.

Highlight of this hotel was the roof bar. I cannot comment on the `all inclusive` package, but didn't feel ripped off paying normal bar prices. My only complaint would be the change in house wine half way through the week, which made it barely drinkable, and unfortunately the only red wine available which I found a little odd.

The pool area and pool water are clean and relatively well maintained. Visiting near the season end meant it wasn't busy for us, however there were lots of sun beds available, so I don't think this would be a problem come summer. My only complaint would be the bar prices and small plastic cups.

Our main reasons for picking this hotel were location and price. This hotel has a perfect location, being only a few minutes walk from the Roman bridge.

Do not visit the indoor pool unless you are prepared to pay €3 to wear an essential shower cap. I can see no reason at all for this requirement, but the guy was adamant we weren't going in without one.

Well worth a visit if you stay here is the Porta Nova Bakery. Follow the road round the hotel and down the hill. A minutes walk and you will see the bakery on the left, usually brimming with freshly baked goods at great prices.

Do of course ask at reception for anything and everything. We found them incredibly helpful with their recommendations, providing timetables etc etc.

Room Tip: We were on floor 3, a happy medium between the front door and the roof top bar.

I have just returned from a week at the Porta Nova Hotel. Wonderful food with plenty of choice, clean rooms, friendly staff and close to the centre. What more could you ask for! The price of the holiday was so cheap, I don't know how they can do it. The only drawback is that I have to go on a diet now!!!
I will definitely stay there again, and will recommend it to my friends.

You really can't beat this hotel for value for money - what they deliver for the cost is impressive. The rooms are large and clean, basically furnished perhaps, but roomy, clean and comfortable. I availed of the large bath for which there was loads of piping hot water, there was also great pressure in the shower. Last time we stayed there our room was a little too noisy so we asked for a room facing away from the road, and indeed the room was much quieter this time. We still love the roof top bar which is such an asset – Vila Gale’s bar was poor in comparison as it had no view and no atmosphere. The bar staff get a little overwhelmed at times as it seems understaffed, but it doesn't detract from the experience. The pool area is also much better here than at the Vila Gale as there are more than enough sun loungers in Porto Novo, there's no queuing for chairs. At the Vila Gale we had to sit in the cafe and wait for people to vacate loungers and then pounce on them - which was ridiculous. I can see were people had issues with staff – although I always found staff polite, there are few smiles and aren’t particularly welcoming, I have noticed though that reception staff have not changed in the three years we’re been coming to Porto Novo which is good to see. Next time I think we plan on going in October again - £27 per room for a nice hotel with good sized room that are clean and comfortable with a great pool and pool side area and handy to the town – you just can’t beat it!!!

we have visited portugal many times and stayed at the porta nova in 2006 for the first time. we loved it so went again this september. it was a huge disappointment. as others have stated, food was inedible, staff were rude and unwelcoming, hotel was in need of maintenance.. there was little entertainment however the roof bar is nice. this is no where near a 4* as stated. it has gone down hill since our last visit and we were very disappointed. tavira itself is lovely and i would recommend it to anyone, but the porta nova is not the place to go

We have been travelling to the Algarve for 10 years and have stayed at Porta Nova on many occasions. We initially stayed when it first opened and were really impressed but we have watched it deteriorate over the years. Our last stay was terrible. There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the room which there were when they first opened. The tv is outdated. The noise from the generator keeps you awake at night. When we booked we asked for a poolside room and were informed that we would have to pay extra for that. We have never in the past paid extra for a poolside room.

We booked breakfast at 8 eruos each and it was appalling. We could not eat it. We had to have beans on toast as that was the only thing edible.

In relation to staff we also found the reception staff need to smile a bit more and appreciate that they may be unhappy in their job but they are working in an industry where you have to be polite and helpful.

Unfortunately we will not be staying again as there are many other places to stay in Tavira at far better value. We have in the past stayed in a bed and breakfast with a riverside view and have to say that this was far better accommodation and food than the Hotel Porta Nova.

Agoda website said that double or twin room available, we booked but hotel would only provide a twin bed room. Agoda were contacted but they advised that that was ok and it was up to the hotel, hard to believe that all rooms were booked but no support from Agoda. Website on the day still advised that twin or double bed were still available. Hotel staff were not very helpful, would not take any responsibility and blamed Agoda for our problem.
We were placed in a roadside view room, this seems somewhat typical of some of the internet bookings we have had, ie sub quality rooms or rooms in noisy or in bad position.
Rooms were otherwise quite ok but with very small old style TV and firm beds, as well as a small refrigerator with no freezer capacity, say to make ice for drinks or for travel use.
No Wi-Fi in rooms, only in public areas which makes it hard for making Skype calls.
The hotel advised that they were full so it is unlikely that any complaint will worry them.
No pool towels, poor for a 4 Star hotel and the toilet brush was disgusting and had not been cleaned for a long time.
Toilet and hand basins both leaked, they wanted 3 Euros a day to hire the room safe.
Breakfast was excellent and the position was good.

Room Tip: Ask for one on the pool side
