We have just returned from 2 weeks at Vila Gale Tavira . The hotel is well appointed and comfortable with free wifi in the reception /bar area. In house entertainment for summer was just starting the second week we were there. Two nights per week live music plus dance, magician, parrot shows other nights. The “Fun Team” ( in house) were active during the day also ( staff could not do enough for you)
Reception area is wide and spacious, very Moorish in style
We thought that the rooms were fine with a free fridge and aircon ( although the safe was e2.5 per day). Television was unusually good, bbc news, sky news, CNN plus bbc entertainment and syfy ,history, nat geo etc mostly in English with Portuguese sub titles. There were about 70 channels on the TV.
No problem getting a lounger /umbrella at the pool. There is an inside pool, a quite reasonable gym, sauna and spa
A lot of people seem to use the hotel on a B&B basis, there are lots of places to eat in the city. We were HB , it’s an international hotel catering for a number of tastes and the evening meals were a bit strange at times, always two main meat choices plus a fish option and a veggie option and a chef who would prepare the meat of the day to your tastes. Two soups, a salad bar and a good selection of sweets. Some of the main courses were not really to our taste with very large pieces of meat. Having said that, there was always something you could eat.
Note previous comments re older visitors, Saga etc. Yes, Saga do operate to the hotel and there were a lot of Portuguese pensioners also . The Portuguese seemed to disappear at night ( other than when the live music was on). There were also Dutch, French and a few Germans. The Saga folk were lovely and you can even book trips to Seville or a river cruise through the Saga rep. We were with Jet2 with no rep.
Would we go back, well yes, Tavira is a lovely not very touristy city with the centre pedestrianised. The hotel was very good ( other than comments re main courses at night and that's all a matter of taste). The hotel is not " on the beach" , the pool was good and if you wanted the beach you can take the ferry over to Isla de Tavira ( which we did four times)
Tips for Tavira
Try the wine tasting at the hotel (its free and it showcases all the wine made by a group company) you can buy a bottle of wine from reception for under e3 and drink it in your room if you wish (it's e2 a glass in the bar)
A good way to orient yourself is to take the tour on the land train which calls at the hotel, it goes to Cuatro Aguas, around the town to the castle etc
The big building with Continente on it at the other side of the river is a 100+shop shopping centre with a multi screen cinema in it ( most films are in English with Portuguese sub titles) Its about a 20 minute walk from the municipal market behind the hotel.
Visit the camera obscura in the city, its in the old water tower behind the castle , it €3.5 each , it's an English chap who operates it and his pictorial tour is an absolute hoot
Pink Flamingo Bar opposite where the ferry leaves for Isla tavira is worth a visit
There is a piano bar beside the castle which has live piano music some nights
Ferries to Isla de Tavira. The easiest is from the city, it's e 1.90 return or if you are off season (or fancy a 20/25 minute walk on the road through the salt pans to Cuatro Aguas, e 1.50 return. The island is beautiful with a beach as far as you can see , you can hire a beach umbrella, 2 loungers and a windbreak for e 10 a day from Bar Xiri (the second set of umbrellas) .there are some restaurants at the ferry end, very reasonably priced
An idea for a day trip Is Faro by train. The train station is about 20 minute walk then €6.30 return on the train. The old town is very nice
The hotel runs a free shuttle bus to Vila Gale Albacora some days, it’s a nice hotel converted out of a fishing village right on the river ( opposite Cuatro Aguas). you would really need a car to stay there, it must be a good hour walk to Tavira
