“Winter Break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

The staff at the hotel couldn't have been more helpful - they certainly went the 'extra mile' if they could see some way they could make our stay better.
Some guests complained about the food, but they never seemed to have empty plates! In fact at lunch and dinner the soup was good, there was always plenty of salad and a choice of main course. Desserts were good and included several flavours of icecream. Breakfast was plentiful. If you wanted a gourmet break perhaps this is not the hotel to choose, but certainly no-one went hungry.
The rooms and corridors could be quite noisy, so maybe in the summer when it is busy this could be more of a problem.
The hotel is sited on the edge of the small town of Tavira and next to the salt flats where bird life is plentiful.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the lift and atrium are quieter, and the rooms overlooking the pool have less traffi...

We stayed for 4 nights whilst hiking, and it was a convenient location for walking in the hills north of Tavira. The hotel was very comfortable and all facilities were easily accessible. Breakfast was excellent with loads of choice and the food was hot and fresh. The hotel was fairly quiet given the time of year (mid February), as was Tavira. We were advised by the hotel staff that we could park on the road and this saved us the parking charge. The only complaint we have is that you can hear noise from the room next door e.g. TV, coughing and talking. Apart from that, a good stay.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the pool are said to be quieter and you get a better view, but out of season, the...

The staff were unfailingly helpful, efficient and cheerful. The food was in general was satisfactory and breakfasts were good, but the vegetarian food was often poor. The rooms were pleasant with a largish bathroom and lots of hot water. You had to pay extra for wi-fi access in your room & I was told by others that the connection in their rooms was not good. I therefore used the free wi-fi and connected without any problems throughout the ground floor. Our room was on the third floor and I found that I could also connect there too if I sat on the chairs by the atrium.
The outdoor pool was being repaired whilst we were there and people who had paid extra for views over this were not pleased at being woken up by hammering and drills.

Rooms are good, staff are good, spa is great, food is OK (just !) plentiful but the hot breakfast buffet is oily and just about warm, The restaurant is far too expensive when compared to other local and well reviewed restaurants within a short ish walk (mainly over the bridges). We will stay here again because its cheap, looks after golfers and free parking. Oh and the bar is little expensive so best avoided

We have stayed at the Vila Gale for the past five years for a week in March/ April and have never been disappointed. The staff from reception to cleaners are extremely helpful and friendly and ensure that your stay is a pleasurable one. I concede that some parts of the hotel's decor is beginning to look a little tired, but the cleanliness is beyond reproach. We always stay bed and breakfast and have found the selection and quality of the food to be superb. the only negative I would post is that the beds are a little on the hard side, but I understand that they have been refurbished lat year. We will be arriving on 11 th April for a week and as usual are really looking forward to our stay I the beautiful town of Tavira.

Did I stay at the same hotel as other reviewers? Agree that it's in a good position and the staff are excellent but "excellent breakfast" and "excellent food at gala nights Xmas and New Year?. The breakfasts were average with all the eggs already cooked and waiting for the start of breakfast at 7. Lobster Thermidor was the fish course of the New Year meal. It wasn't cooked a la Thermidor and mine wasn't lobster. Another guest without prompting said the same. Yet around us were others saying it was wonderful and taking photos. Want fresh local produce? Don't eat here or at least not out of season. Can only think that those praising the food live on convenience meals at home. My room was on the west side with views of the salt pans, the distant gleam of the sea, the towers of five churches and the castle wall. My balcony also had a good view of the kitchen delivery entrance and I saw the frozen food deliveries twice. If you're a birder this would be a good hotel for a weeks B & B. Tavira is a pleasant town with some attractive buildings and worth a few
days visit. Many of the churches, sadly, are not open to visit.

Went just out of season so the hotel was really quiet - this meant that there was hardly anyone in the pool or the spa area downstairs. The food and drink were excellent - tried a different fish every lunchtime - I can thoroughly recommend cuttlefish.
There is a small jetty at the hotel where a boat will take you out to Isla da Tavira - definitely worth going to - see if you can work out why all the anchors were put there...
